OTTAWA SWEEPS SEASON SERIES OVER RAVENS, WINDSOR AND BROCK STAY TIED FOR FIRST IN THE WEST
Curtis Shakespeare (Alliston, Ontario) scored a game high 21 points to lead the way as the No. 8 Gee-Gees knocked off the No. 3 Carleton Ravens 77-71 this past Saturday night in the OUA men’s basketball regular season finale at Montpetit Hall in Ottawa. It was the first time in more than a decade that Ottawa has swept the regular season series from the Ravens. Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Ottawa, Ontario) had 19 points and six rebounds for Ottawa, while Osvaldo Jeanty (Glourcester, Ontario) replied with 20 points in a losing cause for Carleton. Ottawa shot 25 for 54 (.463) from the field to the Ravens 25 for 63 (.397), as well as 18 for 27 from the foul line. With the win, the Gee-Gees (18-4) will finish the regular season in second place, two points behind the Ravens (19-3) in the OUA East division standings. Both teams will receive a bye into the OUA East Division semi final round next Saturday night.
Windsor 64, Lakehead 43
After a close call in overtime the night before, the No.10 Windsor Lancer men’s basketball team (15-6) bounced back with a convincing 64-43 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves (1-21). The Lancers controlled the game from the opening tip off, as they built an early 17-5 lead and went into the dressing room up 32-17. The Lancers played a commanding defensive game, and did not allow Lakehead back in the game. Rich Allin (Chatham, Ontario) had a game high 18 points and eight rebounds for the Lancers while shoorting 8 for 9 from the field. Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ontario) added ten points of his own with four rebounds. With the win the Lancers have earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and will host an OUA West semi-final match up for the first time in 19 years. The Lancers currently sit in a tie for first place with the Brock Badgers (15-6), as the two teams are set to face of this Wednesday night for first place and home court advantage throughout the playoffs. Game time is set for 8:00pm at the St.Denis Centre in Windsor, Ontario.
