No.4 BRANDON'S SECOND HALF SURGE LIFTS BOBCATS OVER THE No.5 WINDSOR LANCERS AT CIS CHAMPIONSHIP
With the victory, the Canada West finalist Bobcats, participating at the tournament for the 19th time in 21 years, advance the national semi-finals for the first time since 2001 when they went on to lose in the title game to StFX for the second year in a row.
Brandon will face No. 8 Saint Mary's Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Atlantic Time. The Huskies upset No. 1 Concordia 63-62 in the championship opener.
The Lancers, playing at the Final 8 for the first time since 1982 after capturing their first OUA banner in 25 years last week with a win over four-time defending national champion Carleton, will face Concordia on the consolation side at 11:30 a.m.
"I think we did a really good job on defense today. It took about the first 15 minutes to get clicking but once we got used to the rims and the scenery we were okay," said fifth-year guard Chad Jacobson (Brandon, Man.), named player of the game following a 16-point, 5-rebound, 4-assist effort. "It's been our style of game all year long, we like to play up tempo defense, put pressure on opponents and make them turn the ball over."
Ahead 40-38 at the half, Brandon extended its lead to 66-59 with 7:29 remaining in the contest, and then went on an 11-0 run in the next 4:52 to seal the victory.
The Bobcats shot 46.4 percent from the floor compared to 38.7 percent for their OUA rivals. The Lancers were shooting well in the first half, at a 44.4 rate, but struggled in the final period converting only 30.8 percent of their attempts.
Windsor also struggled from beyond the arc, going only 4-for-25 (16%), while Brandon drained eight of 16 three-point attempts.
"We like to get up and down the court but they (Windsor) controlled the tempo for most of the first half," commented second-year Brandon head coach Barnaby Craddock, chosen CIS coach of the year on Thursday. "They're a talented team and it?'s hard to take them out of what they're trying to do, but I though Yul Michel, his defense on Kevin Kloostra, was the difference in the game."
Michel, a fourth-year guard from Montreal, finished with 17 points and a game-high nine assists. Sophomore guard Dany Charlery, also from Montreal, led all players in the match with 22 points.
Charlery scored the Bobcats first 11 points in the second half as they starting to pull away.
"We didn't play well on defense, we just defended poorly," remarked Windsor bench boss Chris Oliver. "Credit Brandon, they gave it to us today. It's disappointing because we're a better team than what we showed today. We're usually a pretty good team on defense."
Kloostra (Chatham, Ont.), a fourth-year forward named to the first OUA West all-star team this season, was held to 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting, including 0-for-5 from downtown.
Fourth-year guard Ryan Steer (Windsor) paced the Lancers with 21 points, while six-foot-eight forward Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ont.) had 14.
