OTTAWA ADVANCES TO CIS MEN'S BASKETBALL SEMI FINALS
Halifax, Nova Scotia.
It is the first time that the Gee-Gees have advanced to the national semi-final game
since 1993, when they fell to the St. Francis-Xavier X-Men 64-54.
"Our fifth year players played exceptionally well tonight, but it was once against
Josh who was the x-factor for us," said Gee-Gees bench boss David DeAverio after the
game. "He is our star player who tonight showed that he was one of the elite players
in the country."
UBC took a two point advantage to the locker room after the opening twenty as Bryson
Kool nailed a buzzer-beater to put the Thunderbirds ahead 39-37.
The teams went back and forth over the opening five minutes of the second half
before Gibson-Bascombe hit a jumper to spark an 11-2 run that put the Garnet and
Grey up 70-57 with ten-minutes to play.
But Casey Archibald scored 12 of his game high 32-points over the next four minutes
to cut the Gee-Gees lead down one at 78-77.
Yet once again big number three hit a three-ball to put the Gee-Gees ahead for good
as Gibson-Bascombe ignited a 9-4 Gee-Gee run to ensure the victory.
"Casey was unbelievable tonight making tough shots especially late in the game, but
Josh's three-pointer turned was the turning point of the game."
The Gee-Gees went 23 of 37 from the charity stripe while holding the Thunderbirds to
just 21 visits to the line. Ottawa dominated on the boards, out-rebounding UBC
41-29.
Ottawa will face the winner of the Carleton-Acadia quarter-final on Saturday night
at a time that is to be determined by the host committee later tonight.
