WINDSOR DEFEATS CARLETON TO CLAIM THE WILSON CUP
The Windsor Lancers came out strong in front of a vibrant home town crowd of close to 3,000 basketball fans. Windsor put together an outstanding offensive attack draining everything early on, putting Carleton back on their heals from the get go. Kevin Kloostra (Chatham Ontario) made a number of clutch shots to take away any momentum the Ravens built, and led Windsor to an early 24-17 lead.
The Ravens experience and determination to win kept the team pressing, as senior forward Aaron Doornekamp knocked down some big three pointers putting Carleton back in the game 29-29.
Lancers second team all-star Ryan Steer (Windsor, Ontario) followed Kloostra’s lead hitting the clutch baskets, while the Windsor defense played a tight game holding Osvaldo Jeanty (Gloucester, Ontario) to six points and Carleton to 36 percent shooting from the floor in the first half. The Lancers went into the dressing room with a 47-39 halftime lead.
The second half saw much of the same. The Lancers came back out scoring the first four points in the half to establish a double figure lead. Windsor’s Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ontario) had one of his best halves of basketball this season as he scored from the post and pulled down a number of big rebounds en route to the Lancers building a 76-61 lead.
The four-time defending CIS Champion Ravens kept themselves in the game by playing a tough defense of their own late in the second half. With five minutes remaining they went on a 13-0 run to pull within six points 78-72, but fell short as the Lancers were a determined squad on the night, making the free throws down the stretch to earn them an 84-75 victory.
Windsor Lancer’s Kloostra was awarded the Kitch MacPherson Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the game with 23 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals on the night. Steer added 19 points and give assists, while Surmacz finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.
The Ravens were led by OUA East Most Valuable Player Jeanty, with a game high 25 points. Stuart Turnbull, added 16 points and Doornekamp had 13 points in the loss.
Both teams, joined by wild card entry University of Ottawa Gee-Gees will head to Halifax this weekend to compete for the national championship. Carleton will see No.6 Acadia in their quarterfinal, while the Lancers are matched up with No.4 Brandon, and Ottawa will take on a tough No.2 UBC squad.
