WARRIORS SWEEP THE MUSTANGS WHILE YORK UPSETS THE HAWKS
Despite being outshot 44-21, the Waterloo Warriors came through with a gutsy 5-3 win over division-rival Western Ontario. It was a chippy affair with 19 minor penalties in the game. The Warriors scored three first-period goals, including an unassisted marker from Shane Hart, his first of two on the day. The Mustangs tied the game, 3-3, on an even-strength goal by rookie centre Sean Courtney (Ennismore, Ontario) from third-year defender Matthew Manias (Toronto) at 10:59 of the third period. Just 3:31 later, Hart replied for the Warriors before fourth-year forward Ryan MacGregor (Carleton) sealed the win with a power-play goal at 19:31. David Philpott added two helpers for Waterloo, to bring his team-leading total to 25 points on the season, which ranks him tied for sixth in the OUA. With Lakehead’s win and overtime loss to Windsor this weekend, the Mustangs drop to third in the Far West Division while Waterloo sports an OUA-best 15-2-1 record on the season.
York 4, (7) Wilfrid Laurier 3
Rookie left winger Jake Van Allen (Stouffville, Ontario) potted the eventual game-winner at 4:49 of the third period to lift York to a 4-3 win over division-leading Wilfird Laurier in Toronto. York jumped out to a 2-0 lead but a pair of power play goals from the Golden Hawks in the second period evened the game until rookie forward Kent Merriam (Kitchener, Ontario) found the back of the Hawks net and gave York a lead for good. The Lions scored all four of their goals on even strength while Wilfird Laurier scored all three markers on special teams, including a shorthanded goal from second-year defender Jordan Fair (Guelph) at 9:40 of the third period. Third-year Lions goaltender Kevin Druce (Kingston, Ontario) was sensational, stopping 43 of Wilfrid Laurier’s 46 shots. Combined with their 5-2 win over Brock on Sunday, the Lions jumped into a second-place tie with the badgers in the Mid West Division.
