HAWKS LOSE CIS SEMI FINAL IN DOUBLE OT
The win ends the season for the Golden Hawk men’s hockey program after a record season that saw them finish with a 22-5-1 record and the second strongest offense in the country.
Both Golden Hawk contests in the championship series were double-overtime decisions.
Overtime was forced by Moncton in the final minute of the game when Busque scored his second of the hat trick performance. The Moncton’s extra attacker had just jumped on the ice, when the goal was poked into the net as the whistle blew.
“Our team played an absolutely outstanding game,” said head coach Kelly Nobes. “The group we have, are tremendous athletes and the silver lining is that we’ve got a great nucleus of guys who will be back.”
Matt Grennier led the Hawks with two goals including the first of the game which took place a minute into the contest. Moncton tied up the game minutes later but then Grennier added his second before Mark Voakes netted a power play marker to take the team ahead by two into the first intermission.
Moncton answered with two special team goals – power play and short handed in the second. Nathan Peacock netted the fourth goal late in the period.
Goalie Jeff MacDougald faced 30 shots in the second two periods of the game as the Hawks attempted to hold onto their lead. The amount was three times more then his opponent.
“I don’t think that it was as bad as it looked,” commented Laurier player of the game Jeff MacDougald on taking 50 shots through the game. “I thought that our team played well in the d[efensive] zone. I don’t believe it was the toughest game we played this year.”
The loss finishes the Hawk season as a national semi-finalist after they claimed silver at the conference level.
