CARLETON WINS CLOSE BATTLE WITH OTTAWA, WHILE BROCK DEFEATS MCGILL
The Carleton University men's varsity ice hockey (1-0-0-0) team defeated the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees (0-1-0-0), 2-1, in their first OUA league action in 33 years. Carleton's return to the OUA and CIS sees the team score two third period goals to defeat their cross town rivals.
The Ravens matched the University of Ottawa shot for shot in the first period and only during a four minute stretch when they ran into penalty problems did Ottawa have the advantage over Carleton. The Gee-Gees opened the scoring on a power play goal by Dan McDonald (New Liskeard, Ont) at the 12:27 mark of the period. Carleton kept pressure on Ottawa's goaltender, Martin Bricault(Cap-Rouge,QC) but could not put the puck behind him in the first period.
In the second period, Carleton's goaltender Jordan Wakefield (Spruce Grove AB) was the story shutting Ottawa out on their 10 shots on goal and keeping the Ravens in the game. In the third period, Carleton started to put pressure on the Ottawa defense and with 10 minutes remaining Carleton had a two man advantage power play which led to the first Raven goal as Jared Cipparone (Tecumseh, Ont) scored on a feed from Brodie Beard (South Porcupine, Ont) and Mike Testa (Ottawa, Ont).
Carleton kept the pressure on and with four minutes remaining Beard found Tony Manitta (Manotick, Ont) all alone in front of Ottawa's net and the first year Psychology major made no mistake in scoring the Ravens first OUA winning goal in more than three decades.
The last two minute Wakefield kept Ottawa off the board with several great saves and Carleton earned its first OUA victory in the team's return to CIS action.
Brock 3, McGill 2
The Brock University men's hockey team (2-0-0-0) knocked off the McGill Redmen (1-1-0-0) on the road Saturday night by a score of 3-2. This is the first time in school history that the Badgers took both games from Concordia and McGill on the road in Quebec, and the first time in coach Murray Nystrom's 10 years at the helm that the Badgers have defeated the Redmen.
The first period was a display of wide open hockey, the puck flowing
from end to end with both teams generating chances. The shot totals
for the period were 18 to 11 in favour of Brock. It was Tyler Leggo (Cambridge, Ont) who would break the shutout streak as he would snap a
shot top corner giving their Badgers a 1-0 lead.
McGill would try to answer getting more and more shots, their efforts
would culminate on 2 on 1 where the pass across left the McGill
shooter with an empty net only to be robbed blind by the trapper of
Matt Harpwood (Welland, Ont) who for the second night in a row played a
remarkable game.
The most impressive factor of Brock's performance was the way in which
the Badger's minimized their mistakes. The team's rookies were looking
like seasoned veterans and the leaders of the team were stepping their
game up.
Early in the second period McGill's Simon Courcelles (Rosemere, QC)
would find some space in the slot and bury the puck on Harpwood tying
the game 1-1.
This time it was Brock's leaders who stepped up to the challenge. J.J.
Martin (Thorold, Ont) would grab a rebound off a Paul Holder
(Quispamsis, NB) shot and toe drag it around the helpless goalie's leg
and put the Badger's back in command with a 2-1 lead. The play
continued to go back and forth but the Badgers defense core tightening
up and giving McGill nothing to work with. Pat Selin (Cochrane, Ont)
was very strong on defense breaking up many McGill opportunities. The
Badgers would take the 2-1 lead to the dressing room.
In the third McGill would once again show why they are one of the top
teams in the OUA. They would be given a powerplay opportunity and make
no mistake, as Courcelles would score his second of the game making
things square at 2.
It would seem that Martin had buried the game winner on a scramble in
front of the net, but the goal was called back due to the net being on
the mourning at the end of the play. Eric Toonders (Winchester, Ont)
would feed Labelle who for the second time would find Martin who would
score the game winner, this time with no dispute.
In goal, Harpwood turned aside 26 McGill shots improving his season
record to 2-0.
