UQTR AND LAURIER SET TO FACE OFF FOR QUEEN'S CUP
Laurier and UQTR faced off just once in the regular season which saw UQTR travel down to Waterloo. The two teams skated to a 3-3 after a five minute sudden death overtime period. The Patriotes will be vying for their sixth OUA banner in the last nine years, while the Golden Hawks have not won the championship since the 1989-90 season.
The road to the final wasn’t easy for either of the two teams this year. The Patriotes needed two overtimes in game two of their best-of-three series with the Toronto Varsity Blues, earning their place in the OUA Championship game thanks to Thiery Poudrier’s (Victoriaville, Quebec) second overtime goal in as many games and sixth of the playoffs, including a hat trick against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in quarter-final action.
Poudrier was the Patriotes leading scorer with 20 goals and 22 assists for 42 points, fifth highest in the league. Great chemistry with linemate Jonathan Boutin (St. Constant, QC) created lots of opportunities with Boutin assisting on 12 of Poudrier’s 22 goals and Poudrier assisting on eight of Boutin’s 12 goals. Boutin tied for the OUA lead in assists and second in the CIS with 29 during the regular season. Defensively, the Patriotes relied on a league leading 2.30 goals against average from their goaltenders.
Laurier defeated their cross-town rivals, the No.6 Waterloo Warriors, 7–6 in overtime on a Rob Dmytruk (Scarborough, ON) shot from the top of the face-off circle earning a 2–0 series victory. The win marks the first time since 1991-92 in which the Golden Hawks have been to the Queen’s Cup yet it is the second consecutive season where they have ousted the Warriors from the playoffs 2–0.
As a team the Golden Hawks led the league in goals per game, averaging 4.71 and finished the regular season with a 22–5–1 records. Laurier was led offensively by junior forward Mark Voakes (St. Thomas, ON) with 18 goals and 25 assists, good enough for third in the OUA. Teammate Nick Vergeer (West Lorne, ON) was the central support figure in the Golden Hawk offence with 28 assists, adding seven goals to total 35 points. Laurier allowed an average of 3.13 goals per game, sixth in the OUA.
The Golden Hawks will need to find a way to stay out of the penalty box against a gifted offensive team in the Patriotes. In their two games against the Waterloo Warriors, the Golden Hawks took 21 minor penalties and three 10 minute misconducts. UQTR will look to remain calm in front of a raucous home Laurier crowd. The Patriotes will rely on the skill of some obvious stars to win the games, including Poudrier, who has the ability to make the difference on a team which saw five players named to the OUA all-stars.
