HOCKEY REDMEN STING STINGERS IN PLAYOFF OPENER

MONTREAL - It wasn't quite as one-sided as the infamous 1929 St. Valentine's Day Massacre but ninth-ranked McGill jumped into a five-goal lead and coasted to an easy 6-3 win in the opening game of their men's hockey quarterfinal at McConnell Arena, Wednesday.

In other OUA playoff games, Ottawa scored with four seconds remaining to defeat Queen's 2-1 and Lakehead needed 50 minutes and 13 seconds of overtime to edge York 3-2.

McGill, which led 2-0 after one period and 4-1 after two, outshot Concordia 42-18, including a 21-4 margin in the final period.

The cross-town rivals were meeting in post-season play for the first time since 2001 and it was McGill's most lopsided playoff win over Concordia since a 7-2 victory on Feb. 22, 1989.

The Redmen got goals from six different players as they extended their consecutive game undefeated streak to 10-0-1 over the Stingers. In their last 22 meetings, the Redmen own a 16-3-3 head-to-head record. This season, the McGill men are undefeated against Concordia, with a 4-0-1 record and a 27-12 edge in goals.

Sophomore Louis-Simon Allaire continued his torrid scoring spree with a goal and one assist, giving the high-scoring rearguard a point in seven of McGill's last eight games, where he has posted a 5-8-13 record over that span.

Junior netminder Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., kicked aside 15 of 18 shots for the win, including a penalty shot save off sophomore Mike Baslyk with McGill leading 1-0 late in the first period. The Redmen scored a minute later and never looked back. Poitras upped his lifetime mark in a McGill jersey to 58-26-6, just three wins shy of the school's all-time record set by Jamie Reeve between 1985 and 1990.

Also scoring for the Redmen was Mathieu Leclerc (game-winner), Chris Churchill-Smith (shorthanded), Benoit Martin, Lucas Madill and Daniel Pharand.

Remi Tremblay, Trevor Blanchard and Jason Béliveau replied for the Stingers, the latter two scoring in the final three minutes when the Redmen were ahead 6-1.

Eleven McGill players earned points in the game, including Shawn Shewchuk who picked up an assist and extended his point-scoring streak to nine contests. The senior from Lloydminster, Alta., has five goals and 17 points over that span.

McGill went 4-for-7 on the power play and tallied one shorthanded marker, while Concordia replied on 2-of-10 manpower situations.

Rookie Sheldon Baerg started in goal for the Stingers but was replaced by junior Patrick Lepage some five minutes into the final period after surrendering five goals on 28 shots.

Game 2 is set for the Ed Meagher Arena on Concordia's Loyola campus, Friday at 7:30 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 is slated for Sunday night at McConnell Arena (7 p.m.).

REDMEN RAP - The midweek win was the first by the Redmen in six attempts this season... The team had lost all five previous Wednesday games, including one pre-season game... McGill has met the Stingers four times on Valentine's Day and the Redmen have won the last three, including a 5-2 decision in 2003 and a 7-2 conquest in 1995... Their lone loss was an 8-2 setback in 1982... The Redmen have met the Stingers 19 times in post-season play and have a 10-9 edge in games won and a 5-4 margin in series victories...McGill has now played 57 OUA playoff contests since joining the league in 1987and own a 25-32 record.
