WESTERN SUSTAINS A LATE CHARGE BY THE LIONS, WHILE BROCK STEALS A VICTORY VERSUS WINDSOR IN A SHOOTOUT
The York Lions men's hockey team learned that a strong effort at both ends of the ice does not necessarily guarantee victory as it fell 2-1 to the league-leading Western Mustangs Saturday (Nov. 24) at Canlan Ice Sports, despite putting together a full 60 minutes of hard work.
York kept Western goaltender Keyvan Hunt busy throughout the game, registering 34 shots on net, while its own goalie, Carlo Di Rienzo (Woodbridge), turned away 31 of 33 shots in a losing effort.
The 5-5-0-3 Lions came out firing in a frenzied first period which saw them strike first as part of a 15-shot offensive flurry. York's Ryan Hyland (Okotoks, Alta.) scored his second goal of the season at the 15:18 mark of the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead.
However, the 11-2-0-2 Mustangs shifted the momentum and evened the score when Peter Franchin wired a blast from the point into the top right corner just over the shoulder of Di Rienzo.
In the third period, they took the lead on what would turn out to be the game winner, a slap shot through traffic off the stick of OUA leading scorer Kevin Richardson. Richardson now has 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists) in 15 games for the OUA Far West Division leaders.
Western sustained a late charge by the Lions, who applied tremendous pressure in the dying minutes with six attackers on the ice.
Brock 5, Windsor 4, OT/SO
The Brock University Men's hockey team (10-2-1-1) played the Windsor Lancers (1-11-0-1) in game one of a double header. The Badger's dominated the first two periods of play, but would be surprised by an impressive third period comeback by Windsor forcing the game to a shootout.
Brock took the play to the Lancers right from the opening drop of the puck, out-shooting Windsor 13-5 in the first period. This pressure would pay off when Brock's powerplay would connect to set up Tyler Leggo (Cambridge, ON) to giver the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
The second period got underway with the Lancers fighting back. Windsor managed to create some offense but it would be the Badgers Ryan Del Monte (Mississauga, ON), Nathan Hooper (Hamilton, ON), and Curtis Yausie (Cononsay, SK) who would score on Brock's first three shots of the period to give Brock 4-0 lead. At this point Windsor would pull their goaltender and call a timeout and being to gain back some moment.
Brock would go on a 5 on 3 powerplay although they were able to create many opportunities they were not able to put the nail in the coffin. To exemplify this Windsor would come back and have Mike Barbour score a goal at the end of the second period to make it a 4-1 game
With a goal under their belt Windsor came out of the gates with some jump in their step. Their confidence grew when Kyle Nishizaki would score to make the game 4-2. Brock managed to create some offense but Windsor Jeff Cutter would step up to keep Windsor in the game. Barbour would score his second of the night, followed by an Alex White goal to send the game into overtime 4-4.
Brock would outshoot the Lancers 3-0 in the OT period but could not put the game away. Brock managed to tighten up their defense and Brock would find themselves in their 3rd shoot out of the season.
In the shootout Brock's goaltender Matt Harpwood (Welland, ON) would show some great patience and turn away both Windsor shooters. While Del Monte and Paul Holder (Quispamsis, NB) would both score for the Badgers which would secure them the win 5-4.
