GROVER SCORES IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO PUSH HAWKS OVER ST.FX
Team mate Tyler Grover scored his first ever game winner as a Golden Hawk minutes after stepping out of the penalty box in the second overtime period.
“No question, this is the biggest goal of my career,” commented the second year defender about his first career post-season point. “I just came out of the box, there was a turnover, and I took a shot. I just wanted to make sure I hit the net, then anything can happen.”
Chris Di Ubaldo opened scoring in the contest with the first of what would be two power play markers. The Manitoba bred athlete led his team this season in power play goals with 11 of the total 18 he scored.
St. FX’s Tyler Dyck, who led his team in game winners this season, netted two goals, which included the equalizer at one and what appeared to be the game winner at 14:50 of the third. Collin Circelli had an opportunity to pick up the insurance marker being awarded a penalty shot which would be stopped by backstop Jeff MacDougald.
“Credit the X-Men,” continued Nobes. “We knew coming in they were a gritty team and they showed it tonight. They shut us down on three or four 5-on-3 opportunities. They battled hard.”
Laurier finished 2-for-7 with the man advantage, while StFX went 0-for-8.
Mark Voakes, Laurier’s leading point getter, who netted the game-tying goal, completed a set face off play as head coach Kelly Nobes had scripted it in the previous time out.
“I have to send my thanks to Ollie Hicks, an assistant coach from Manhattan College,” he commented. “The play worked at the right time and the guys executed it perfectly.”
The win is the Hawks’ first in post-OUA play since 2001 when they defeated St. Thomas 4-1 and finished third in the tournament. Last year, in their most recent attendance, the Golden Hawks were winless in the six-team national tournament.
With the victory the number four seeded Golden Hawks now receive a day off before facing the number one seeded University of Moncton on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. local. The game will be broadcast live on TSN and all games at the tournament are webcast live on the internet.
