CARLETON GET SECOND WIN OF SEASON IN OT OVER MCGILL, LAURIER DUMPS WINDSOR
The Carleton University Ravens (2-2-0-1) improved to five points on the season with an overtime 3-2 shootout victory over the McGill University Redmen (1-2-0-1) at McConnell Arena, in Montreal, Quebec.
Carleton played an aggressive game against a McGill, a pres-season favorite in the Far East division, both teams going into the first intermission scoreless. In the second period Carleton opened the scoring for third straight game as Mike Testa (Ottawa, Ont.) a second year forward scored at 9:45 on a pass from Jared Cipparone (Tecumseh, Ont.) McGill tied the game 24 seconds later, bringing the game to a tie yet again heading into the third.
Doug Jewer (St. John's, NL), Carleton's goaltender, made numerous saves to keep Carleton in the game. McGill scored the lead goal in the third period six minutes remaining. However, with just two minutes remaining Raven Justin Caruana (Orono, Ont.) got his third of the season to send the game to OT. A scoreless extra period brought about a shootout, resulting in a Carleton victory as Testa scored the only goal.
Laurier 7, Windsor 1
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (2-2) evened up their record with a 7-1 trouncing over the Windsor Lancers (0-3). The Lancers were in search of their first win of the season and remain winless after another weekend of play.
Nick Vergeer (West Lorne, Ont.) had a four-point night in the eight-goal contest recording two goals and two assists. Although Windsor dominated play in the opening minutes of the match, Laurier turned things around and got behind Hawk net-minder Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) to go at the Lancers. Laurier's Nathan Peacock (Tillsonburg, Ont.) scored the game opener, his third of the season.
Rookie Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) picked up what would be the game winner on the power play as he stickhandled around the Windsor defence and put the puck above goalie Jim Watts' (Edmonton, AB) glove, who made 25 saves in the losing effort. Colin Williams (Orangeville, Ont.), Mark Voakes (Shallow Lake, Ont.) and Matt Maccarone (Whitby, Ont.) combined to score the game's three additional goals.
