UOIT SHOCKS MUSTANGS, WHILE BROCK TAKES CLOSE ONE AT LAKEHEAD
The UOIT Ridgebacks (2-11-0-3) won a spcetacular game this past weekend at the Campus Ice Centre coming from behind in the final minute to force overtime and eventually win the game over the No.6 University of Western Ontario Mustangs (12-2-0-3) 3-2 in a shoot out.
The Mustangs, team battled hard with the expansion UOIT Ridgebacks during the opening period with the teams taking a 0-0 deadlock into the dressing room for the first intermission. Solid goaltending by Matt Mateja (Mississauga, ON) and tight checking were the success story for UOIT in the opening period.
The second period did not get off to a great start as the Mustangs netted two gaols within the first 2:48. Marcus Smith (Markham, ON) opened the scoring with his third of the season while Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, BC) socred his fifth to put UWO up 2-0. The Ridgebacks never gave up and worked hard shutting down the Mustangs the rest of the second period.
The third period saw UOIT pressure Western offensively but were turned away by Hunt and the Mustangs on several good chances. The final minute saw UOIT pull their goaltender in favour of the extra attacker and with their net empty, Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, ON) walked out front from the side of the net and wired a wrist shot home with 57 seconds to draw UOIT within one. With the goalie still pulled and the Ridgebacks fans loud, captain Richard Power (Scarborough, ON) scored a huge goal with just 32 seconds left to tie the game at 2-2.
Overtime was exciting but decided nothing in the 5 minutes of play. Of The Ridgebacks played most of the overtime period shorthanded due to a four minute TJ Legge (Champleau, ON) high sticking penalty and then two men short for the final two minutes. The home side sensing a chance at victory killed off most of the two penalties before an illegal substitution call against the Ridgebacks was made by the referee with two seconds remaining in overtime. The call resulting in a penalty shot saw UOIT goaltender Mateja shutting the door and taking the game into a shootout. It wasn't until Jason Fransky (Bancroft, ON) scored in the sixth round of the shootout to clinch a huge win for UOIT.
Brock 6, Lakehead 5 OT

Brock would explode out of the gates led by captain Ryan Del Monte (Mississauga, ON) who would score 58 seconds into the first period beating goaltender Chris Whitley (Oshawa, ON) short side. Midway through the period Brock and Lakehead would exchange powerplay and it would be Brock capitalizing with Del Monte scoring his second of the night. In the late minutes of the first Brock McPherson (Brampton, ON) was able to jam a puck inside to make the score 2-1 in favor of Brock.
A two word synonym for the second period: shoot out. Brock owned the first half of the period led the way by J.J. Martin (Thorold, ON) who scored just 1:43 in. Lakehead answered with a powerplay goal of their own as they managed to bat a puck out of the air in a scramble past goaltender Matt Harpwood (Welland, ON). Brock came right back Del Monte went upstairs to complete the hat-trick and secure Brock's lead. In another scramble Lakehead would score to send it to the third 4-3
for Brock.

It would be Gary Friesen (Niagara-on-the-lake, ON) who would score his first of the season, hammering home a rebound in front of the net, to put Brock back in charge 5-4. Powerplay?s would prove to be crucial as McPherson would set up shop and deflect a point shot for the powerplay marker and to send the game into overtime.
In OT Harpwood would play outstanding to turn away all Lakehead chances. Brock put together a few good rushes but could not end the game within the confines of OT sending the game into a shootout.
Brock led off the shootout with Del Monte coming in wide off the wing, fake a move, and slide the puck short side to put Brock in the lead. McPherson would shoot first for Lakehead, Harpwood was patient forcing McPherson to shoot wide. Paul Holder (Quispamsis, NB) would score his third shootout goal beating the goalie five-hole for the win. Lakehead?s second shooter would attempt to deke Harpwood glove-side
along the ice, but Harpwood stayed with him, securing the win for Brock.
