QUEEN'S WINS OVERTIME THRILLER OVER YORK, BROCK EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO FOUR WITH WATERLOO WIN
The Queen's University Golden Gaels (2-1) beat the host York University Lions (0-2) in a 2-1 overtime thriller. The win puts the Gaels even with RMC in the mideast division while the Lions sit at the bottom still in search of their first win of this early season.
York took the lead with 4:04 left in the opening period when Tyler Harrison (Whitby, Ont.) beat Gaels goalie Brady Morrison (Thamesville, Ont.) who was making his debut for Queen's. In the first two periods of play the Gaels were outshot 28-13 as Morrison was forced to make 27 saves to keep the visiting side in the game.
The Gaels were rewarded in the third period of play when Blake () scored to tie the game and send it into overtime. Brady Olsen ended the game for the Gaels who dominated the final two periods of play, outshooting York 20-7.
Queen's takes on Brock Friday October 19th at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee and Guelph Saturday, October 20th at the Kingston Memorial Centre on Coca Cola Hockey Day. York visit Toronto on October 17, 2007.
Brock 5, Waterloo 3
Brock University (4-0) extended their winning streak to four games after defeating the University of Waterloo (2-1) by a score of 5-3 on Sunday. The loss to the Badgers accounted for the first defeat of the season for the Warriors.
Waterloo's first opportunity would come with a 5 on 3 powerplay when Doug Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) capitalized and put Waterloo up 1-0. Jonathon Labelle (Prevost, QC) would have the answer for Brock, also a powerplay goal, to tie the game at 1-1.
Brock goaltender Tom Lee (Port Perry, Ont.) faced 21 shots in the second period, making his debut as a Badger. Brennan Giroux (Charlie Lake, BC) received a pass off of an interception and walked in on a two-man breakaway before burying the shot past the Waterloo goaltender to put Brock up 2-1. Waterloo penalized Brock in giving up eight penalties, two of which the Warriors scored on to give them the narrow one goal lead entering the third.
Nathan Hooper (Hamilton, Ont.) tied the game at 3-3 with only 3 minutes left in the third. A Brock powerplay would produce the game winning goal from Tyler Leggo (Cambridge, Ont.) on a deflection from a Joey Pell (Dryden, Ont.) point shot.
Brock tops their division with eight points while Waterloo sits in second behind Western with four points.
