PATRIOTES BEAT HAWKS IN QUEEN'S CUP
1,635 fans came out to the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex as UQTR won their sixth title in nine years.
The silver medal for the Golden Hawks is their fourth in the program history. The team has won only three gold medals since 1971.
Mathieu Gravel, later named the championship's most valuable player, scored the first two of three goals which would haunt the Golden Hawks for the rest of the evening as UQTR went up three goals to none in the opening period. Eric Beaudin added the power play marker to make it three.
"We didn't have a good first period," said head coach Kelly Nobes. "We didn't play well without the puck - like picking up guys on the back check. They had their chances and they took them."
Rob Dmytruk got the Golden Hawk offense moving, scoring two power play goals in the first half of the second to close the lead to one before UQTR got another marker, this time on a two-on-one rush.
"We did a better job with our defense in the second," said Nobes. "We still left a lot of pucks in front which we didn't put in their net."
Laurier reduced the lead once again in the third but when the sixth attacker came on the ice late in the period, the Patriotes scored an empty netter to put the game outside of reach and win the provincial title.
Patriotes netminder Dany Dallaire faced 34 shots throughout the night while Hawk goalie Jeff MacDougald faced 30 shots.
Gravel and Jonathan Boutin both had three-point performances for the green and orange while Nick Vergeer, Luke Girrard and Dmytruk each had two point nights for the Hawks.
"We haven't lost two games in a row this year, said team captain Matt Grennier. "We'll learn from this one and be ready for our first game in Moncton."
Both teams now travel to Moncton, New Brunswick to compete in the University Cup National Championship six-team tournament from March 22nd through to the 25th. For more information on the national tournament including the seeding and schedules check www.universitysport.ca
