HAWKS AT UNIVERSITY CUP
After flying in on Tuesday, the team picked up a light practice at Moncton's home rink on the University campus. Today the team got their first taste of the championship host facility when they practiced on the ice of the 8,000 seat Moncton Coliseum.
Following practice media from across the country met with the six coaches and player representatives at the event kick-off press conference.
"We're a hard working discipline team," commented head coach Kelly Nobes at the press conference. "The team has a lot of depth and receives good offensive production from our top three lines."
Laurier finished the regular season with the most potent offense in Ontario with a total of 132 goals. Moncton is the only team in the country with more goals then the Hawks with 142.
The team has attended the national championship six times previously, with the most recent appearance coming last year in Edmonton, Alberta. Wilfrid Laurier has never won a national championship in men's hockey, however were national finalists twice.
"We're a well disciplined program with good leadership," said Nobes when comparing last year to this year's team. "and we have 14 guys who have been [to the national championship] before and know what it's like."
Laurier is seeded fourth in the six team tournament with both #1 Moncton and #6 St. Francis Xavier in their pool.
"We know we're in tough with these other five teams here at the tournament. We'll have to play some good defensive hockey, and play well away from the puck," concluded Nobes.
Wilfrid Laurier plays their first game of the championship versus the St. Francis Xavier X-men on Thursday March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. local time.
