GUELPH NAMES WALTERS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
\"I'm very proud to announce that Kyle Walters has accepted our head coaching position,\" commented Athletic Director Tom Kendall. \"He brings a great deal of leadership and enthusiasm to our program. He also knows how to win and most importantly he is respected by the players on the Gryphon team. Coach Walters has an in-depth knowledge of the university and the tradition of Gryphon football. He understands what excellence is and knows what it takes to achieve it."
For the past two seasons, Walters served as the full-time assistant coach at Guelph and assumed the position of defensive coordinator. Prior to his tenure at Guelph, Walters spent the 2003 season as the assistant special team's coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
In the 2004 campaign, Walters helped the Gryphons rise from ninth position in 2003 to fifth and qualified for post-season play. The team's record improved from 2-6 to a respectable 4-4. In 2005, the Gryphs also qualified for a post-season berth.
Walters, a 1997 University of Guelph Bachelor of Science graduate, was a member of the Gryphon football team from 1992-96. In Kyle's rookie season, the Gryphons captured the Yates Cup and in 1996, he captained the Yates Cup Championship team. This two-time OUA All-Star and All-Canadian (1995 and 1996) was a second-round pick of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10th overall) in the 1996 draft. During his stint with Hamilton, Kyle played safety and halfback in the 1997 and 1998 Grey Cup. In the 2002/03 campaign, he was the special team's captain. He led the team in special team tackles for three years.
Originally from St. Thomas, ON, Walters now resides in Guelph with his wife Rena.
