10 OUA GAMES ON THE SCORE'S UNIVERSITY RUSH
Score anchor Tim Micallef, one of the premier play-by-play announcers in Canada, returns to call games for the 2006 season. Micallef will once again be working with partner-in-crime Duane Forde, who brings a wealth of experience to the colour analyst position that dates back to his playing days as a fixture in the Western Mustangs backfield. Adnan Virk takes over as the full-time sideline reporter after seeing some spot duty in that post during the 2005 season.
"We've enjoyed a great relationship with The Score over the past four seasons," says OUA Executive Director Ward Dilse. "Tim and Duane are guys that understand the passion and energy of OUA football and it comes through in the University Rush broadcasts. The Score have raised the bar each season and with 10 games scheduled for 2006, including some intriguing match-ups, I expect this to be the most successful year so far."
"Canadian university sports and The Score are perfect partners," says David Errington, senior vice president and general manager, The Score. "Our passionate viewers demand a hardcore approach to sports, and that's exactly what they'll be getting from the athletes in the OUA - a league that embodies Canadian pride and perseverance."
University Rush opens with style on September 9 when the Ottawa Gee-Gees, semi-finalists in 2005, travel to Waterloo to take on the defending Vanier Cup champion Laurier Golden Hawks. Led by all-Canadian quarterback candidate Joshua Sacobie, the Gee-Gees will bring their dynamic aerial attack into University Stadium, hoping to send an early message to the new-look Hawks and the rest of the league.
The Score travels to Kingston the following week (September 16) to show the spectacle that is Queen's Homecoming as the Golden Gaels, featuring last year's Norm Marshall Trophy winner Danny Brannagan, host all-Canadian running back Daryl Stephenson and the Windsor Lancers. On September 23, it's back to Waterloo for a rematch of last season's Yates Cup with the Western Mustangs facing their old nemesis Laurier. Legendary Mustangs head coach Larry Haylor, with former Western star Greg Marshall now at his side, will look for one last victory over the champion Golden Hawks. Laurier beat Western twice last season, including a decisive 29-11 victory in the Yates Cup.
The fourth Rush broadcast on September 30 pits two of the most bitter rivals in Canadian Interuniversity Sport when the York Lions and Toronto Varsity Blues clash in the annual Red and Blue Bowl. The Lions narrowly edged out a heartbroken Blues squad with a touchdown in overtime when the two met last season and Toronto undoubtedly hopes to pay the cross-town foes back this time around.
Thanksgiving weekend will be a memorable one on the schedule as the Golden Hawks make the short trek to Hamilton to face the McMaster Marauders at Ivor Wynne Stadium on October 7. The game features an intriguing coaching match-up as McMaster rookie head coach Stefan Ptaszek looks across the sidelines at his mentor Gary Jeffries for the first time. Ptaszek was the offensive coordinator for last year's Vanier champs and a record-setting receiver in his Laurier playing days from 1990 to 1994. With McMaster having suffered two defeats to the Hawks last season, including a tough 43-21 loss in the OUA semi-final, the Marauders and their youthful, charismatic leader are intent on creating a new era of success for maroon and grey football.
On October 14, Windsor and the Guelph Gryphons meet in Guelph for a rematch of their University Rush thriller from last season. The Gryphs scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to upend the host Lancers 22-19 in Windsor, for a crucial win that secured them a playoff spot.
The Score will also broadcast a game in the final week of the regular season on October 21 with the two teams still to be determined, before getting right into playoff coverage on October 28 with OUA quarter-final action. A semi-final game will be aired on November 4 and one week later, the curtain falls on the 2006 OUA season at the 99th Yates Cup.
