GAUER PICKS THREE AS MAC STARTS PTASZEK ERA OFF RIGHT
TORONTO - On the strength of Bryan Gauer's three interceptions, the McMaster Marauders soared past the York Lions, 33-16, in both team's 2006 OUA season opener on Monday at York Stadium.
The Marauders started strong, jumping out to an early 14-0 lead. Gauer's first interception, on the second play of the game, set-up McMaster's first score - a 45-yard touchdown pass from Jon Behie to Jordan Charter. Just 37 seconds later, York fumbled the ball, leading to Behie's 11-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 for the visitors after just 1:53.
The Marauders would close out the first quarter with two field goals from kicker Pauolo Faiazza to hold a 20-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Behie connected with Rob Serviss on a 28-yard touchdown pass and Faiazza added another field goal to give McMaster a 30-0 lead at the break.
York regrouped at halftime, coming out strong in the third quarter. The team would hold McMaster to just three points in the final two frames and proved it can score quickly, posting two touchdowns in the final minute.
York would get on the board first with a safety early in the fourth quarter. The Lions also added two touchdowns late as back-up quarterback Bart Zemanek connected on a 10-yard pass to Jocelyn Corcelles. After an on-side kick, rookie Jason Marshall scampered in on a four-yard score to make the final, 33-16.
Behie finished the day with 202 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-24 passes. He also ran one in.
In addition to his first quarter interception, Gauer also grabbed one in both the second and third quarters off York starter Mike Crabtree. Andre Sadeghian added 81 yards on 10 carries on the ground for McMaster.
Zemanek performed well in relief, connecting on 12-of-16 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. Crabtree was 8-of-17 for 60 yards and three interceptions.
Rookie Kevin Walsh picked up 83 yards on five catches through the air and Marshal finished with 44 yards on six carries for York.
The Lions travel to London for their next game - a 7pm tilt with the Western Mustangs on Saturday. McMaster hosts Waterloo at 2pm on Saturday in Hamilton.

Toronto quarterback David Hamilton was 16 for 39 for 192 yards a touchdown and three interceptions. His favourite target was Cory Kennedy, who caught six passes for 48 yards.

Laurier 24 Guelph 17 OT
GUELPH - The Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the Guelph Gryphons 24-17 to open the 2006 season in a packed house at Alumni Stadium. The Laurier defense dominated all day but they almost let one slip when Guelph made a fourth-quarter comeback, overcoming a 14-2 deficit. Guelph managed to score 15 unanswered points to take a 17-14 lead with just over one minute to go in the fourth quarter. Laurier answered with a last-second field goal to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Laurier scored a touchdown on their first drive and Guelph fell two yards short of the end zone to end the game.
Laurier's offence had its problems but got the job done in key situations. In the first half, quarterback Jamie Partington made a couple of errors as he had two red-zone interceptions. In the fourth quarter, Partington came out strong and threw two touchdowns to wide receiver Andy Baechler. With Laurier trailing 17-14 with 46 seconds remaining Partington stepped up on a third and 18 play hooking up with Baechler again for a 30-yard pass to get the Golden Hawks in field-goal range. In overtime, Laurier drove the ball down to goal line quickly with a big reception by wideout Will Northcote, which led to the Dante Luciani score to give Laurier the lead.
Although Guelph lost, they had some things to be happy about after the game. The main one was freshman running back Nick Fitzgibbon. Guelph's offence moved nowhere in the first three quarters other than some exciting Justin Dunk scrambles. In the fourth, Fitzgibbon sparked the team and the Gryphon fans. Fitzgibbon had a 50-yard kick return to give the Gryphons great field position. He then finished the drive with a dazzling 44-yard touchdown run to put the Gryphons back into the game. With under two minutes to go, Fitzgibbon came up with another touchdown run and with a Jeff Keegan two-point conversion, the Gryphons shocked the crowd and took a 17-14 lead. The Gryphon offence fell two yards short of the end zone in overtime.
The Gryphon defence had a great first half but struggled in the second, giving up two second-half touchdowns and not being able to hold the offence late in the fourth and in overtime. Coach Kyle Walters will probably be thinking about third and 18 for a long time as he was one play away from upsetting the defending Vanier Cup champions. The main story for the Gryphons was failed opportunities. Early in the game, a pass interference penalty by Laurier took the Gryphons to the goal line, but Laurier came up with a massive goal line stand.

Windsor 42 Waterloo 2
WATERLOO - Nick Romain's two touchdown runs vaulted the Windsor Lancers into a 14-0 first-quarter lead and an eventual 42-2 romp over the Waterloo Warriors.
Both offensives got off to a sluggish start, but midway through the first quarter, Romain turned the game around. At 8:44 of the first, Romain scampered 54 yards for the opening score. After the Lancers defence held the Warriors, Romain once again burst up the left hand side for a 49-yard score opening up a 14-0 Windsor advantage. These were only two carries Romain would have in the entire game. The Lancers led 17-0 at the half.
In the second half, Windsor continued to roll. After Daryl Stephenson plunged in from the one-yard line to make the score 24-0, Windsor quarterback Dan Lumley hooked up with Mike Harrington for a 66-yard scoring play to give the Lancers a commanding 31-0 margin. Stephenson would add another major on a three-yard touchdown run. Waterloo's only points came on a conceded safety late in the third.
Stephenson led the Lancers in rushing. He had 21 carries for 163 yards, while Romain had just the two touchdown carries for 103. Lumley completed six of 12 passes for 166 yards on the day.
For Waterloo, Travis Gellatly led all rushers with eight carries for 50 yards. Starting quarterback Jon Morbey was 13-for-27 for 150 yards. Evan Martin relieved Morbey in the second half and was 3-for-9 for 40 yards.
Windsor (1-0) will host Toronto (0-1) and Waterloo (0-1) will head to McMaster (1-0) in week two action.
