EMOTIONAL SCHIAVONE RALLIES STANGS
LONDON, Ont. - Grief-stricken Derek Schiavone kicked five field goals as the Western Mustangs (5-2) clinched an OUA playoff spot after a 29-12 comeback win over the suddenly struggling No. 7 McMaster Marauders (5-2) before a crowd of 6,522 fans at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
Schiavone, whose father Veto died this week at age 51 following complications from surgery, led an inspired comeback to hand the Marauders a second straight loss in Western head coach Larry Haylor's final regular season home game.
The win, a first for Mustangs offensive coordinator Greg Marshall against his former team, gives the Mustangs an unbeaten regular season record (4-0) at home. Marshall, who guided the Marauders to four straight Yates Cup titles from 2000-03, will take over the Western program next season as Haylor is scheduled to retire after a 31-season involvement.
McMaster 17-year-old Ryan Fanthom, making his first CIS start as both Adam Archibald and backup Jon Behie were unavailable due to injuries, was thrown off his game by persistent pressure in the fourth quarter as he was sacked several times and intercepted twice. The rookie was 11-of-26 for 97 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions on the afternoon.
Western (5-2) travels to Kingston, Ont. for a game against Queen's (3-4) next Saturday. No. 7 McMaster (5-2) hosts Guelph (2-4-1).

Laurier 68 Toronto 7
WATERLOO - Ryan Lynch of Waterloo, Ont. rushed for 196 yards and Laurier's first three touchdowns as the number six nationally ranked Golden Hawks (6-1) defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (0-7) 68-7 in front of a crowd of 1,059.
Toronto had trouble moving the ball through Laurier's stingy defense - only netting 178 yards over 12 first downs to Laurier's 516 yards to 26 first downs.
\"We had an opportunity to see a lot of younger faces on the field today,\" said head coach and manager of football operations Gary Jeffries. \"They had a chance to show what they can do and how deep we are as a team.\"
Backup running back Brodie Legein (Hamilton, ON) carried the ball 11 times for 83 yards and two more of Laurier's eight touchdowns. Rookie Josh Bishop of Mississauga, Ont. led all receivers with four catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. The air-assault was hindered for both teams by the constant winds at University Stadium.
Quarterback Jamie Partington (Stoney Creek, ON) left the game in the third after accumulating 137 yards and two touchdowns on 7 completions. Backup quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouver, BC) through four passes and completed two for 46 yards in the balance of the game.
Running back Tyler Daly led the Blues offense with 20 carries for 103 yards. Toronto's points came from two field goals by kicker Joe Valtellini as well as a single as a result of a missed field goal.
Joe Labenski and Anthony Maggiacomo each picked up their first two sacks on the season. Brent Hickey led all Hawks in tackled with 4.5 as 27 players each had a hand in some kind of defensive statistic in the game.
Laurier decreased its penalty total dropping from their average of 10/game to 6 for 95 yards. Toronto, the least penalized team in Ontario, was penalized 10 times for 80 yards.
The Hawks have outscored the Blues 466 - 51 over the last nine meetings and haven't lost to Toronto since October 5th, 1996 (13-10).
Laurier will travel to Windsor to face the Lancers next weekend while Toronto will host the Ottawa Gee Gee's. NOTE: Laurier's game against the Lancers will be available only on the internet at www.laurierathletics.com or www.570news.com and not on radio as a result of a conflict with the Kitchener Rangers.
