WESTERN WINS ON LAST-SECOND SCHIAVONE FIELD GOAL
Trailing 23-22 with less than three minutes to play, Western quarterback Michael Faulds completed a 55-yard strike to fifth-year receiver Jay Leroy to set up the winning field goal.
Faulds finished with 292 yards passing on 20 of 35 completions while Leroy hauled in a 15-yard pass earlier in the game to give him a team high 70 yards on the day.
With Western's all-star running back Randy McAuley out with an injury, the ground assault was led by fifth-year veterans Jay Akindolire and D.J. Bennett, who finished with 123 yards and 93 yards respectively.
Akindolire also punched in a fourth quarter touchdown while third-year inside receiver Ryan Clutterbuck opened the scoring for the Mustangs when he grabbed a 16-yard pass from Faulds 1:53 into the second quarter.
Schiavone, who led the Mustangs in scoring in 2005, added two other field goals and a safety in the contest.
Defensive back Matt Carapella picked up his third interception in as many games for the Mustangs.
Western returns to action next Saturday when the Mustangs face the defending Vanier Cup champion Laurier Golden Hawks (2-1) in Waterloo.
