GRYPHS PILE UP POINTS AT HOMECOMING
In front of a packed 5,806 at Alumni stadium, the Guelph Gryphons beat the Toronto Varsity Blues 66-14. The Gryphons dominated the Blues in all aspects of the game as it was a completely one-sided affair. The Gryphons now have their first win of the 2006 season and the Blues are still winless, now with a 0-4 record. Rookie head coach Kyle Walters must be relieved to have his first win as his team was flat-out dominate all game long.
Quarterback Justin Dunk was incredible all afternoon as he torched the Blues through the air and on the ground. Dunk had a whopping 487 yards passing with five touchdown passes and 75 rushing yards with two touchdown runs. Dunk was the star of the game, and showed why he is regarded around the OUA as a star quarterback. The Blues defense couldn't contain the Gryphon receivers, especially Dave McKoy. The turning point of the game was McKoy's 105 yard touchdown reception on a hitch pass from there own end zone. The Blues defense couldn't touch McKoy as he had five catches for 227 yards and three touchdowns, and
stud wide receiver Jeff Keegan had two touchdowns with 115 receiving yards. The offense was all over the Blues which was a main reason the Gryphons got out to a 48-0 lead at halftime.
The Gryphon defense stifled the Blues offense, as the Blues barely crossed midfield throughout the game and didn't put up points until late in the 3rd quarter. Trevor Small had a key interception early in the second quarter which adds on to his total as the Gryphons' all-time leading interception leader. Small is now very close to clinching the OUA record for all-time interceptions in an OUA career.
The Blues had no running room all game and couldn't exploit the strong Gryphon defense. The lone bright spot for the Blues was wide receiver Corey Kennedy who had two touchdown receptions. The Gryphons' special teams were good as well with an early blocked punt by fullback Josh McCreight and the strong leg of punter Rob Maver. The Gryphons were the better team all-afternoon long due to superior efforts from the offense, defense and special teams.

Waterloo 14 Queen's 13
Waterloo's Jon Morbey's one-yard sneak for a touchdown with no time on the clock capped off an incredible comeback for the Warriors as they stunned the Queen's Golden Gaels 14-13.
After Queen's marched the field and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:04 on the clock to make the score 13-8 Gaels, the Warriors pulled out an improbable comeback. Fifth year quarterback composed the Waterloo offense with less than one minute on the clock. With 16 seconds left Morbey hooked up with first year receiver Dustin Zender on a 39-yard play down to the Queen's 2 yard line. On third and goal with no time on the clock Morbey's pass was incomplete, however, pass interference was called on Queen's (in the end zone) setting up the last play of the game from the one. Morbey's keeper was successful sending Waterloo to their second straight victory under interim head coach Marshall Bingeman.
Prior to the final minute of the fourth, the game was a defensive struggle. Queen's led 3-0 after one. Waterloo got on the board late in the second on a 3-yard TD pass from Morbey to Ryan Felhaber. Queen's hit their second field with just over a minute left before the break sending the teams to the dressing room with a Waterloo 7-6 lead.
In the third, the skies over University Stadium opened up. In a down pour starting the third, the defenses took over. Waterloo would get a single on a missed field goal early in the fourth setting up the fantastic finish.
Jon Morbey led all Waterloo rushers with 177 yards. He also threw for 143 and one touchdown. Sean Cowie had a great game for Waterloo hauling in 6 catches for 54 yards.
For Queen's, QB Dan Brannagan threw for 158 yards on 16-27 passing. On the ground, Billy Therrien was kept in check with only 26 yards on 5 attempts. Receiver Brad caught nine balls for 90 yards for Queen's.
The win by Waterloo evens their record at 2-2 and also drops the Queen's season record to the .500 mark at 2-2. Next week Waterloo (2-2) travels to Laurier (3-1) while Queen's (2-2) heads to McMaster (4-0).

Laurier 34 Western 18
The defending Vanier Cup Champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-1) shut out the University of Western Mustangs (2-2) in the second half en route to a 34-18 victory over their bitter rivals.
The game started off with intensity as the Western Mustangs came out and danced on the Hawk during their introduction. Laurier followed the Mustangs out of the tunnel and a war of words ensued at mid-field.
The first quarter turned out to be low scoring with one point awarded to Western on a missed field goal kick from 24 yards. A second field-goal attempt was blocked by a Laurier special teams unit.
In the second quarter some excellent field position allowed Western to jump out to a quick 15-0 lead on scores by Jesse Bellamy and D.J. Bennett. With the Hawks on their heels, Coach Ron VanMoerkerkes' defensive unit stepped up as Luke Pinder forced Quarterback Mike Faulds to fumble on his own 6-yard line. The ensuing play led to a six-yard Dante Luciani touchdown.
The Golden Hawks success in the second quarter continued as the defense forced the Mustangs to go two-and-out. Partington started out on his own 35-yard line, and threw a bomb down the sidelines to Andy Baechler for a 41-yard reception. Four plays later, Partington hooked up with Baechler again, this time, in the Mustang end zone.
A late Western field goal would close out the scoring in the first half, and put the Mustangs up
18-16.
Coach Jeffries must have pumped up the defense during halftime after Western quarterback Michael Faulds was 14 of 17 for 187 yards in the first half. In the second half they swarmed Faulds constantly - forcing one fumble and two interceptions.
His counterpart, Jamie Partington was forced out of the game at the end of the first half after suffering an undisclosed leg injury. This opened the door for red-shirted freshman Ian Noble to take his first snap in Purple and Gold. He looked nervous after two incompletions, but came out in the second half and led the Hawks to victory.
A Chris Mamo punt pinned the Mustangs deep in their own territory on the nine yard line. Quarterback Michael Faulds tried to force the ball over the middle, but was picked by freshman Jim Martyniuk. It was one of three interceptions for the young Golden Hawk setting a Laurier record for most in one game. It also put the Hawks in a great position to take the lead. The Hawk offense took no time, running two plays before an Andy Baechler four-yard reverse gave the Hawks the lead for good.
Offensive coordinator Ryan Pyear called an excellent game, keeping the Mustang defense guessing. While the running back trio of Ryan Lynch, Brodie Legein and Peter Quinney combined for 180 yards on the ground, running the clock and controlling the ball in the second half.
The Golden Hawks sealed the deal after a 17 play possession that started on their own 21-yard line and ended with a four-yard Ryan Lynch touchdown.
The Hawks now look forward to playing their hometown rivals, the Waterloo Warriors (1-3) one week from today at University Stadium. Meanwhile, the Western Mustangs will try to recover next week as they host the undefeated Windsor Lancers (3-1).
