Waterloo 13 York 9
WATERLOO - Waterloo's Jon Morbey's 11 yard touchdown pass to Sean Cowie with 9:29 left to go in the 4th quarter was the difference in today's match as the Waterloo Warriors defeated the York Lions 13-9.
On what was a cold and wet day at University Stadium, the Waterloo Warriors needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The first quarter action saw both team's get off to a very sloppy and slow start. Jon Morbey threw for 2 interceptions both picked off by York Lions #2, Jerome Walker. The Lions had problems of their own with an early fumble just 3 minutes into the game and a bad snap from the centre #65 Claudio Tulipano turning the ball over to the Warriors. With both teams unable to get anything going in the first quarter the score was still 0-0.
In the second quarter a big hit by # 3 Brian Stoddart on York Lions # 3 Ricardo Hudson seemed to have sparked the Warriors. On the pursuing offensive drive, the Warriors completed on what they thought was a 55 yard pass for a touchdown by Dustin Zender but the play was called back because of a forward pass. With the Warriors punter # 15 Jason Cook punting two back to back punts placing York on their own 3 yard line, the Warriors received great field position and kicked
a 24 yard field goal to go up 3-0. On York's following possession, #3 Ricardo Hudson fumbled the ball and Warriors Drew Hanes recovered the ball at their own 46 yard line. Jason Cook than nailed a 29 yard field goal to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw much of the same as the Warriors and Lions battled for field position. Early in the third quarter Andy Legg of the Warriors picked off a pass from Lions quarterback Bart Zemanek at the Warriors 3 yard line. The Warriors conceded the 2 points for a safety giving the Lions their first points of the game. At the end of the third quarter Waterloo lead by a score
of 6-2.
In the fourth quarter both teams finally woke up and the Warriors were able to score their first touchdown of the game. Warriors quarterback Jon Morbey found receiver Sean Cowie wide open near the sideline for an 11 yard touchdown pass giving the Warriors a 13-2 lead with only 5:31 left on the clock. On the following drive for the Lions, quarterback Bart Zemanek found #89 Kevin Walsh deep in the end zone for a spectacular catch to narrow the deficit. The Lions
would go for two but would not be successful. On the ensuing kick off and only 2:52 left in the game, Warriors Nathan Zettler would fumble the ball and the York Lions would recover. York needed to score but were unable to with an over throw by Zemanek intended for #7 of York Steven Hughes. The Warriors were able to run down valuable time from the clock to hold on for an 13-8 win over York. Waterloo needed Queen's to lose to Western this afternoon but would not have such luck as Queen's defeated the Mustangs 28-9. Both Waterloo and York will
look back on this season as a learning experience and hope to rebuild for next year.
