Ottawa 34 Queen's 13
KINGSTON - Josh Sacobie passed for 291 yards and three touchdowns as the fifth ranked uOttawa Gee-Gees cruised past the Queen's University Golden Gaels 34-13 Saturday afternoon in OUA football action at Richardson Stadium.
The third year pivot completed 18 of 30 passes and for the second consecutive game avoided throwing an interception as the Gee-Gees racked up 438 yards in total offence.
The Gaels offence sputtered on Saturday, accumulating just 201-yards including 79 on the ground. Queen's starting quarterback Dan Brannagan went 11 of 29 for 59-yards, while Ibrahim Zylstra came on in relief, passing for 88-yards on four completions including a 22-yard touchdown strike to Brad Smith in the final 90-seconds of the game.
Ottawa's special teams proved to be particularly important on Saturday, as Ara Tchobanian consistently pinned the Gaels inside their 10-yard line with his punts. He averaged 40.6-yards per punt, which set the stage for four safeties during the contest. He would also boot a pair of field goals from 36 and 40 yards, his two longest of the season.
The Gaels took an early 3-0 lead on Ryan Elger's first field goal of the day, but Sacobie hooked up with Wayne Desmond on a 49-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes later to give the Gee-Gees the lead for good.
After a pair of safeties and a Queen's field goal, Sacobie ended the first half with yet another final play, hail-mary touchdown pass, this time hooking up with David Crane from 43-yards out. It is the third time this year that Sacobie has finished the half by throwing a last-second bomb for a major.
Ottawa would score another touchdown late in the third quarter before netting a pair of safeties and field goals in the final 15-minutes.
On the defensive side of the ball Mike Cornell has a huge game for Ottawa, twice sacking Brannagan.
With the victory, the Gee-Gees improve their record to 5-1 and move into a three-way tie for first place with the Laurier Golden Hawks and McMaster Marauders with just two games remaining in the regular season. Ottawa will wrap up the home portion of the 2006 campaign next Saturday afternoon when the Gee-Gees host the Waterloo Warriors (2-4) at 2 p.m. as apart of NCAFA Day. The game will be broadcast live on the internet at www.geegees.ca and on a tape-delay on Rogers Television 22 at 8 p.m.

Western 44 Toronto 21
TORONTO - TORONTO - The Western Mustangs improved to 4-2 with a 44-21 over the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-6) at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough on Saturday afternoon.
Western never trailed en route to victory, opening the scoring just minutes into the game on a Jay Akindolire touchdown run.
The Mustangs' offensive line played extremely well by opening up holes for their running backs, especially in the second quarter in which Western outscored Toronto 24-7.
Western got a pair of touchdowns from D.J. Bennett and single rushing touchdowns from Randy McAuley and Akindolire. Ryan Clutterbuck had the lone receiving touchdown for the Mustangs early in the third quarter. Derek Schiavone continued his strong play with three field goals, five converts and a strong day punting.
Toronto's touchdowns were scored by Mike Tully, Tyler Daly and Mark Stinson.
The scoring started for Western on their second offensive drive, with excellent field position on Toronto's 40-yard-line. The Mustangs capitalized for their first of five touchdowns with the good field position, led by its potent three-pronged running game.
Bennett and McAuley each carried the ball twice to set up a second and goal play, which Akindolire capped off with a one-yard touchdown run.
Despite an 83-yard return for Toronto on the ensuing kickoff, Toronto quarterback David Hamilton was intercepted by Mustangs' DB Cory McNair.
It was a sign of a long day to come for Toronto.
Early in the second quarter, Bennett scored Western's second touchdown on a one-yard-dash after the offensive line created a huge hole for a 14-7 lead.
But Western got a scare when Anthony Adderley fumbled a Michael Faulds' pass and Varsity Blues' DB Mike Tutty intercepted and returned the ball 20 yards for a touchdown. Toronto pulled with 7 points, with the Mustangs only leading 14-7; it was the closest Toronto would come within Western for the rest of the contest.
Schiavone kicked a 22-yard field goal with four minutes left in the half to give Western a 17-7 lead. Then, a minute later, after a 38-yard-run from Bennett, McAuley charged in a touchdown for 62 yards to give the Mustangs a 24-7 lead.
On the final play of the first half, Western extended its lead to 31-7 after Bennett scampered in untouched for his second tally of the day, a six-yard touchdown sprint out of the power formation.
Western outran Toronto 267 yards to 21 in the opening half - 128 of those yards were courtesy of McAuley.
On Western's first drive of the second half, tight end Ryan Clutterbuck took a Michael Faulds' pass in the corner of the end-zone for on play action for a 38-7 lead. Another Schiavone field goal later in the quarter made it 41-7 Western.
Schiavone kicked his third field goal of the day - a 10-yarder - midway through the fourth quarter for a 44-7 lead.
Western QB Michael Faulds threw for 1 touchdown and 1 interception. In the first half, he was 9/18. Mustangs' backup QB and freshman Hayden Marks came in late in the fourth quarter throwing no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Late in the fourth, with many of the reserves on the field for Western, Tyler Daly scored a touchdown on a nice pass from Hamilton, wide open in the end-zone. Then Hamilton hit Mark Stinson for a score in the final minute to make the final tally 44-21.
NOTES: Varsity Blues' head coach Steve Howlett was off the sidelines and in the stands serving a suspension for his involvement in a Sept. 30 altercation at the conclusion of the Toronto-York game... Western hosts McMaster next Saturday at 2 p.m. in what will be Larry Haylor's final regular season home game and Greg Marshall's first game against his old squad...
