DUNK AND MARTYNIUK CAPTURE CIS HONOURS

OTTAWA (CIS) - Guelph quarterback Justin Dunk, Wilfrid Laurier safety Jim Martyniuk and Montreal punter Michael Shousha are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 24, 2006.

Dunk, a second-year arts student from Guelph, Ont. was honoured on offence after an extraordinary afternoon during which he was directly involved in seven Gryphon touchdowns in a 66-14 win over Toronto. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound sophomore threw five touchdown passes, including a 105-yard hitch pass to Dave McKoy, and added a pair of rushing majors to help Guelph (1-3) claim its first victory of the season under new head coach Kyle Walters. Dunk completed 21 of 32 passes for 487 yards in the contest, leaving him in sixth place on the OUA all-time list for passing yards in a single game.

Receivers Ivan Birungi of Acadia and Samuel Giguere of Sherbrooke, as well as quarterback Bret Thompson of Saskatchewan were also up for the offensive honour.

Martyniuk, a first-year commerce student from Burlington, Ont. claimed the award on defence as he set a Golden Hawk single-game record with three interceptions in a 34-18, come-from-behind win over Western. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound rookie safety thrilled the homecoming crowd of 8,400 with three second-half picks off Mustang quarterback Michael Faulds which helped reigning Vanier Cup champion and No. 7-ranked Laurier improve to 3-1 on the season.

Linebackers Steve Faoro of Acadia, Pierre-Luc Labbe of Sherbrooke and Kenton Onofrychuk of Manitoba were also nominated on the defensive side of the ball.

Shousha, a third-year engineering major from Laval, Que. captured the special teams honour as he kept a 41.2-yard per punt average on 13 kicks to help No. 8-ranked Montreal (1-2) win the field position battle in a 13-9 road victory over Saint Mary's, the Carabins first win under new head coach Marc Santerre. Shousha's punting was crucial in holding off the menacing Huskies, who amassed 24 first downs and 356 yards of offence in the game.

Return specialist Gary Ross of Mount Allison and punters / kickers Rob Maver of Guelph and Peter Scouras of Manitoba were also considered.
