GEE-GEES SNAP VANIER CHAMPS' WIN STREAK
quarter as the No. 4 ranked uOttawa Gee-Gees overcame a 12-3 third quarter deficit to knock off the defending national champion Wilfird Laurier Golden Hawks 29-19 Saturday afternoon in Ontario University Athletics football action at University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont.
The victory ended the No. 5 ranked Golden Hawks 22-game winning streak against OUA opponents dating back to the 2003 Yates Cup.
Sacobie completed 13 of 23 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a pair of interceptions. Adam Nicholson was Sacoboie's favourite target hauling in catches for 117-yards and a major, while Brampton, Ont. native Davie Masson rushed for a game high 153 yards.
Ottawa held Laurier to just 181 total yards, as Laurier quarterback Jamie Partington went 19 of 30 for 157 yards and a touchdown in a losing cause.
Chris Mamo booted the first of his four field goals from 17 yards to complete a game opening drive, giving Laurier a 3-0 lead. He would extend that lead to six with a 37-yard kick late in the period.
The Gee-Gees trailed 9-3 at the break and fell behind by nine points 2:48 into the
third quarter when Mamo connected on his second 37-yarder.
But that's when Sacobie and the Gee-Gees struck for a pair of majors in a matter of moments to put the game away.
The third year pivot hooked up with Matt Edgeworth on a seven-yard touchdown toss at 10:17 to cut the deficit to three points at before Bill Pritchard crunched Will Northcote to force a Laurier fumble at their own 43-yard line.
On the next play, Sacobie went into the endzone where he found Adam Nicholson for his first touchdown catch of the campaign.
Ottawa would eventually go up 22-13, but the Hawks would make the game close in the dying moments, when Partington hooked up with Dustin Heap with 36 seconds remaining to cut the Gee-Gees advantage to 21-19.
Justin Wood-Roy ended all hope of a WLU comeback when he returned the ensuing on-side kick back 49 yards for his first touchdown to put the game away.
With the victory, Ottawa improves to 2-0, while Laurier falls to 1-1. Up next for
the Gee-Gees is a homecoming date with the McMaster Marauders (2-0) next Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Frank Clair Stadium.
