MUSTANGS ADVANCE WITH 20-16 WIN OVER WINDSOR
The Mustangs advanced to the OUA semi-finals after a defensive battle winning 20-16.
Fullback Jay Akindolire rushed 19 times for a career-best 157 yards as the Mustangs held on for a sloppy 20-16 road victory over the No. 8 Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon. All this without the services of starting quarterback Michael Faulds who was injured with a broken finger.
Akindolire, a five-foot-nine senior, bowled up the middle in swamp-like conditions for a 55-yard gain to set up a field goal and then scored off a one-yard plunge in a 10-point third quarter.
Teammate Randy McAuley broke off a 50-yard scoring run in the second quarter and finished with 17 carries for 127 yards as the Mustangs produced 365 combined rushing yards off 54 carries through high winds and steady rain for most of the game that turned a once-green field into gumbo, making a passing attack a pipe dream. Western's replacement at quarterback, Mark Howard (2/10, -4 yards, 2 INTs) struggled in his first start of the season, due in large part to the weather.
The Lancers took an early lead three minutes into the game with a 60 yard run by Hec Creighton hopeful Daryl Stephenson to put the Lancers up 7-0. Western conceeded a safety with under a minute to play in the quarter to give Windsor a 9-0 lead.
Derek Schiavone kicked two field goals in the game.
Windsor's Logan Lenarduzzi intercepted a Western pass on the Windsor 30 yard line and ran 70 yards for a touchdown to the bring the score to 20-16 but it wouldn't be enough for the Lancers, after their point after attempt was blocked and they were forced to gamble late as a field goal would not provide them with enough points for a tie.
Offensively, Windsor was led by Darryl Stephenson who ran for 128 yards and 1 TD. McAuley ran for 125 yards and 1 TD.
Defensively, Mike Stojcic contributed 6 tackles, 3 assisted tackles and 1 fumble recovery for Windsor, while Lenarduzzi had 3 tackles, 5 assisted tackles, 2 interceptions and 1 TD. Mustang Corey McNair had 4 tackles and one fumble recovery for the Western defense.
In the end, home field advantage meant nothing for both OUA playoff quarterfinal games as the Queen's Golden Gaels came from behind to upset the No. 9 McMaster Marauders 25-19 in Hamilton.
The semi-final game will be held next Saturday Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in Laurier. The Ottawa Gee-Gees host the Queen's Golden Gaels in the other OUA semi-final, also next Saturday at 1 p.m.
