UW BEATS BLUES IN BINGEMAN'S DEBUT
In the losing effort, Toronto's Mark Stinson accounted for all three Varsity touchdowns.
Stinson claimed his first major with a six-yard rush just 1:37 into the game, capping off a four-play, 86-yard opening drive for the Blues. Toronto kicker Joseph Valtellini missed two field goal attempts in the first quarter, but split the uprights from 20 yards in the final seconds of the second quarter.
Waterloo mounted an eight-play, 85-yard drive to open the second half, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown run by Travis Gellatly. Just over nine minutes later, Morbey connected with wide receiver Sean Cowie for a 30-yard touchdown pass, giving the Warriors the a lead which they retained for the rest of the game. Morbey added to the Warrior margin with a 75-yard touchdown run in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.
Toronto drove 68 yards on its next possession, with Stinson adding a seven-yard rushing major. Quarterback David Hamilton found Tony Mammoliti in the end zone to make good a two-point convert attempt, narrowing Waterloo's lead to 21-18. The Warriors responded on their next drive with Morbey again firing a touchdown pass to Cowey for his second major of the afternoon.
In the final two minutes of play, Varsity exploited a Waterloo fumble deep on their own 14-yard line, adding one final touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Hamilton to Stinson. A subsequent onside kickoff failed, and Toronto was unable to
Stinson earned player of the game honours for the Blues, catching nine passes for 94 yards and adding a team-leading 57 rushing yards on 10 carries. Hamilton completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 347 yards, tossing one TD and one interception. Tony Mammoliti was Varsity\\'s top receiver with 138 yards on six carries. Valtellini was good on just one of five field goal attempts.
For Waterloo, Morbey completed 12 of 28 attempts for 265 yards, tossing two touchdowns and no interceptions. Morbey was also the team's top rusher, amassing 133 yards on six attempts and scoring one touchdown. Cowie was the team's top receiver with four catches for 109 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Defensive end Trevor Derreck made three sacks.
The Warriors improve their record to 1-2, and will be back at Waterloo next Saturday to play the Queen's Golden Gaels at 7:30pm. The Blues, now 0-3, will travel to Guelph next Saturday.
