DEFENDING CHAMPIONS SHOW STRONG DURING OPENING WEEKEND
Laurier began their season on a positive note, defeating Queen's 4-1, in a rematch of last year's OUA Championship game. The Golden Hawks came out and dominated the first period, putting the Golden Gaels down three goals early in the game and never looked back. Laurier goalie Cindy Eadie played a strong game stopping 31 shots and maintaining a shutout with less than two minutes left in the game when Queen's Molly Groenewegen scored the Golden Gael's lone goal.
Laurier 5, York 0
The defending OUA champion Golden Hawks improved to 2-0 on the season with a shutout win over the Lions. Laurissa Kenworthy opened the scoring for the Hawks at 15:03 in the first while teammate Sam Cully added two of her own goals including scoring one on the power play. The Hawks had a strong third period to secure the shutout victory, scoring three of their five goals while the Lions were unable to respond offensively having only 15 shots in the game.
Guelph 4, York 0
Guelph came out strong against the Lions, as Gryphons captain Katie Ennis, scored two goals to put Guelph up by two early in the game. Teammate Lindsay Trimble played outstanding for the Gryphons, scoring two goals and adding two assists of her own on the night. The Lions had trouble defensively in the game, surrendering 45 shots to the Gryphons while the offense only responded with 16 shots.
Brock 5, Waterloo 3
Brock opened their season with a 5-3 victory over the Waterloo Warriors. The Warriors out shot the Badgers 39-33 but could not pull out the victory as Brock veteran Heather Allen led the team with two goals and one assist. Krista Lidstol made it 5-3 on the power play with just 4:56 remaining but it was not enough to overcome a strong Badger team.
Toronto 4, Windsor 0
Toronto began their season on a winning note, shutting out the Lancers 4-0. Amy Caldwell opened the scoring at 9:10 in the first period for the Blues and they continued to dominate the rest of the game. Captain Jill Savin, played a strong game for Toronto, scoring two of the teams four goals while teammates Jacqueline Cherevaty and Jill Clark each added two assists in the win. The Lancers were unable to get their offense going during the game, having only 18 shots on net compared to Toronto's 37.
Brock 5, Queen's 4
Brock pulled out their second victory of the season against the Queen's Golden Gaels 5-4. Kate Allgood led the Badgers in scoring with three goals and one assist while Michelle Edgar and Erin Quinn scored the other Brock goals. Elizabeth Chiasson played strong for the Golden Gaels scoring half their goals and adding an assist but Queen's fell just short of a victory, as Brock improved to 2-0 on the season.
Toronto 2, Western 2
Overtime decided nothing as Toronto and Western finished in a 2-2 tie. Amanda Sommerville and Stacey McCreadie scored Westerns two goals while Kim Devereaux and Sue McCutcheon were the goal scorers for Toronto. Both teams played a strong defensive game leading Toronto to 1-0-1 on the season and giving Western their first point of the season.
Guelph 2, Windsor 1
Guelph pulled out a 2-1 victory in a close game against the Windsor Lancers. Guelph jumped out to an early lead as Elaine Dumas scored just over two minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead into the second. Windsor responded early in the second by a Jessica Finlayson power play goal but the Lancers responded with a Lindsay Trimble goal to secure the victory. Goaltender Aleisha Lusk also played a strong defensive game for Guelph stopping 17 shots giving Guelph its third victory of the season and dropping Windsor to 0-2 on the season.
