GOLDEN GAELS STEAL OUA BRONZE FROM BADGERS
TORONTO - At Varsity Arena, Liz Chiasson scored her second goal of the
afternoon with just 3:14 remaining to lift the Queen's Golden Gaels to a
4-3 come-from-behind victory over the nation's eighth-ranked Brock Badgers,
earning Queen's the bronze medal at the 2005 OUA Women's Hockey
Championship.
Chiasson (Kingston, Ont.), who became the OUA's all-time leading scorer
this season, swept home the loose puck late in the third period, capping a
20-minute session that was dominated by the Golden Gaels. Queen's out-shot
Brock 18-9 in the final frame.
With Brock ahead 3-2, Queen's tied the game with just under nine minutes to
play, when Keri Baker (Tecumseh, Ont.) redirected a point shot from
first-year defender Amanda Stenson (Kingston, Ont.).
The late rally was the second comeback of the contest for Queen's, who fell
behind 2-0 before the game was seven minutes old.
In a penalty riddled first period, Brock scored twice on the power play,
with captain Heather Allen (Scarborough, Ont.) and OUA first team all-star
Kate Allgood (Toronto) putting the Badgers in command early.
However, Queen's responded before the period was over on a Brock miscue.
With less than 90 seconds left in the opening stanza, Badgers defender Ann
Lavallee (Burlington, Ont.) put a clearing attempt right onto the stick of
Amy Saundercook (Toronto), who slipped her own rebound under a helpless
Angie Mallory (Kanata, Ont.) in the Brock goal. Chiasson, who earned
Sherwood Hockey player of the game honours for Queen's, knotted the game at
two with a nifty tip-in just four minutes into the second period.
Brock's Briar Komenda (London, Ont.) broke the 2-2 tie midway through the
second, before Queen's started their comeback.
The Badger's Allgood, who had a goal and a great all-around game, was also
named a Sherwood Hockey player of the game.
