LAURIER STRIKES CIS GOLD
The National banner is Laurier's seventh in its history and first for its women's hockey program.
\"I was pleased and impressed with our performance,\" said Laurier Head Coach Rick Osborne. \"Today, like all season, our approach was playing to win, not 'not to lose'.\"
Amanda Joseph, a 23-year-old sociology senior from Oakville, broke the scoreless tie just 28 seconds into the second period and added a clinching empty-netter with 11 seconds remaining in the game. Joseph led the tournament in scoring with four goals and two assists.
Jen Heslin (Bolton, ON) and Jessica Judges (Pickering, ON) put the middle two goals by Alberta goalie Andrea Thomas.
The win ends Alberta's undefeated streak. "I'm proud of our team's streak," said Alberta Head Coach Howie Draper. "We will always have that accomplishment to be proud of." That accomplishment - 110 games undefeated dating back to Oct. 13, 2001.
Alberta's only goal came from CIS MVP Danielle Bourgeois on a power play goal late in the second. She had several chances later in the game, but was unable to get them by Laurier net-minder Cindy Eadie (Brantford, ON).
\"Our seven veterans all wanted to go out with a bang, said defenceman Ashley Stephenson, the team captain and tournament MVP from Mississauga, Ont. We've been flying under the radar all season and Rick (Osborne) prepared us well. We followed our game-plan and played a pretty good game out there.\"
Three Hawks were named to the Championship all-star team including tournament MVP Ashley Stephenson at defense, winger Laurissa Kenworthy (Newmarket, ON) and goaltender Cindy Eadie.
The team wraps up the season with a 17-2-2-1 regular season record and a 5-0 finish in the post season as the Hawks picked up both the OUA and CIS gold medals.
This season could mark the final year for seven fourth year players including Jessica "˜Turbo' Singh (Ottawa, ON), Cindy Eadie, Merritt Blundy (Oakville, ON), Candice Djukic (Binbrook, ON), Lindsay Arbeau (Bath, NB) and Amanda Joseph.
