WOMENS HOCKEY SCORING RECORD ON THE LINE
HAMILTON - With the second half of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's hockey season starting up, it will be a close race to the finish; not only in the standings, but for two athletes, a race to the all-time OUA career scoring record. Chasing down the current record of 136 career points is Queen's University Golden Gael Elizabeth Chiasson (Kingston, ON) and University of Toronto Varsity Blue Jacqueline Cherevaty (Mississauga, ON).
Coincidentally, the current mark is held jointly by former Queen's and Toronto grads, Jules Stevens (Queen's, 1985-92) and Lori Dupuis (Toronto, 1991-97).
Chiasson, a fourth-year forward and two-time OUA Most Valuable Player, needs just nine points in 12 games to snap the benchmark. The team's captain, who is the first Golden Gael ever to be named to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women's hockey All-Canadian team, is no stranger to setting records. Chiasson led the OUA in scoring last season with 45 points (20G, 25A), establishing a new school record in the process. She is on track to better that mark in the current campaign, scoring 23 points (12G, 11A) through 10 games.
Former OUA all-star Cherevaty has returned to the Varsity Blues this season while completing her teaching degree. The fifth-year forward stands at 124 career points heading into this weekend's games. During her three-year absence from university hockey, the Mississauga native played a year professionally, before heading to Korea to teach. With only 10 points on the season so far and 11 games to go for the Blues, Cherevaty will have to turn on the scoring touch to stay in line with Chiasson and her 2.3 points per game.
Friday, January 21, 2005 at the University of Toronto's Varsity Arena could mark the showdown for the two former National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) players as the East division rivals face-off in a game which could potentially see the record broken.

Please note that the OUA records may differ from the CIS marks, as women's hockey was not introduced at the CIS level until 1997-98 season. The years prior to CIS women's hockey being established are included in OUA records, when women's hockey was governed only under the OUA and there were not a maximum number of years for eligibility for student-athletes.
