VARSITY BLUE CHASING OUA HISTORY
The Blues (#9 CIS, 7-3-1) closed out the first half of the season in impressive fashion, winning their final 5 games and knocking off the CIS's #2 ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (8-1-2-1) in their final regular season performance.
The Blues have been led by fifth-year veteran forward Jacqueline Cherevaty (Mississauga, ON.) who has netted four goals and added six assists in 11 games to lead the Blues in scoring. Cherevaty, a product of the Mississauga Girls Hockey program, is second highest scorer all-time in Varsity Blues history. With her 10 points this season she has amassed an impressive 124 points in her OUA career in a Blues uniform. Cherevaty currently sits tied in points with former national team standout Andrea Hunter and is chasing all-time OUA point leader and Olympic gold medalist Lori Dupuis (Toronto Varsity Blues; 58G, 78A=136 PTS).
In addition to being a standout on the ice, Cherevaty is also a talent in the classroom. After completing her undergraduate degree in Engineering Science at UofT she spent two years working for Atomic Energy Canada and then a year abroad teaching in the Republic of South Korea. Cherevaty returns to the University of Toronto to complete a Bachelor of Education degree.
The Blues continue to be one of the OUA's strongest programs with depth at every position. Blues captain Jill Savin (4G, 4A= 8PTS, Oakville ON.) brings a wealth of leadership and talent into every game. Savin, a 5th year UTM student, has competed internationally with Canada's Under 22 national team program and last year earned OUA 2nd Team All Star recognition. On defence, the blues are anchored by 2003-2004 OUA East First Team All Star, Kim Devereaux (Seaforth, ON.). The Blues are backstopped by one of the best goalies in the OUA, Lisa Robertson (Oakville, ON.). Robertson's 1.48 goals against average is the 3rd best in the CIS.
In addition to great players, the Blues have one of the best coaches in the country in Karen Hughes. Hughes, who guided Canada's national team to gold at the World Championship in Halifax in April, has righted the ship at Toronto after a small slide to start the season which saw UofT open with a 2-3-1 record. Since then they have gone 5-0.
A new addition to the Varsity Blues coaching staff this season is Vicky Sunohara (Scarborough, ON.). Sunohara, a veteran member of Canada's national women's team, the Brampton Thunder of the NWHL, and a former Varsity Blue herself, has been helping out with UofT as an assistant coach, focusing on the skill development of the players.
The Blues return to action January 14th, 2005 with a road game against divisional rivals Brock University. The game will be pivotal to both teams as Brock is only one point back of the Blues in the standings. The teams have traded wins so far this season with Brock taking the opening match 4-1 and the Blues rebounding to take the return match 3-2 in overtime.
