ERSKINE NAMED CIS COACH OF THE YEAR
COACH OF THE YEAR: Todd Erskine, Brock University Badgers
Todd Erskine, who grew up in Etobicoke, Ont. becomes the second coach from the OUA to claim the CIS coach of the year award, after Karen Hughes of Toronto in 2000-01. In his seventh campaign behind the bench, Erskine led the Badgers to their best season since joining the OUA five years ago. Brock finished the regular season with a school-best 13-7-1-1 record good for second place in the OUA East Division, and advanced to the conference Final Four for the first time in its third playoff appearance.
Erskine had a vision of women's hockey at Brock a few years ago and made it happen. He was the convenor of women's intramural hockey at the school for two years when he decided to organize a club while still a student. The team was sanctioned with the OWHA in January of 1999, and was granted varsity status for the 2000-2001 season. His coaching background includes an advanced level coaching certificate along with many various coaching experiences, including Guest Coach Prospects Tournament from 2001-2003, Guest Coach NMGHL All-Star Team from 2001-2003, and Team Liaison Japan National Team in 2000. Erskine holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours Health Studies degree from Brock University, and currently works as a research assistant for the Community Health Sciences Department at Brock.
MARION HILLARD AWARD: Sue McCutcheon, University of Toronto Varsity Blues
Ottawa native Sue McCutcheon becomes the third member of the Varsity Blues to received the Marion Hillard Award for excellence in hockey, academics and community involvement, following in the footsteps of Jenny McRae (2002-03) and Bridget Bates (1998-99). On the ice, the fourth-year forward is described has a tremendous two-way player who excels at penalty killer and in the face-off circle, where she was successful 70% of the time this season. The 22-year-old led the Blues to the CIS silver medal in 2002-03, and the bronze medal in 2001-02.
In the classroom, McCutcheon kept a 3.67 GPA this fall in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education. She was an academic All-Canadian in 2003-04, and the recipient of the T-Holders Academic Excellence award for academic achievement and the Helen Gurney Award for athletic and academic achievement. She was also inducted into the U of T Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour society. Her cummunity involvement includes volunteering at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in the Emergency Department and at the Toronto East General Hospital assisting cardio-respiratory patients, and a physical therapist position with the Varsity Blues men's football team.
