OUA ANNOUNCES WOMENS HOCKEY ALL-STARS
HAMILTON, ON - Last night at an awards banquet held at the University of Toronto to kick-off the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women's Hockey Championship, goaltender Cindy Eadie, of the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, was named the OUA Most Valuable Player, presented by Sher-wood Hockey.
The Brantford native, who first received the honour back in 2001, had an outstanding season between the pipes, posting an OUA record of 10 shutouts in a single season. The three-time OUA all-star lead the league in goals against averaged at 0.72 and a 0.96 save percentage. Eadie also received the Top Goaltender award for the second time in her three-year career. The two-sport athlete was also a key member of the Canadian women's softball team that finished fifth at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
For the third year in a row, the Top Scorer award went to Queen's University Golden Gael Elizabeth Chiasson. The Kingston, ON native led the nation in scoring with 49 points (21 goals, 28 assists) this season. In addition, the centre etched her name in the OUA record books, rewriting two career marks. The two-time league MVP broke the OUA career scoring record this season, formerly held by Queen's Jules Stevens and University of Toronto's Lori Dupuis, collecting 154 points over her four years at Queen's. Chiasson also established a new OUA career assists record of 93, breaking Dupuis's mark of 78.
Rookie of the Year in the East division went to Toronto Varsity Blue Laura Foster. The Burlington, ON native recorded nine points this season on Toronto's perennially competitive squad. Receiving the West division rookie award was Elaine Dumas, from the University of Guelph. The rookie forward from Waterloo, ON, made her mark on the league, recording 20 points on the season, 12th in OUA scoring.
In his first full season with the Golden Hawks, head coach Rick Osborne was honoured as OUA West Coach of the Year. Osborne, a Team Canada evaluator, led the Hawks to a 17-2-2-1 record and a number two ranking in the nation. Brock University's Todd Erskine received the OUA East Coach of the Year, taking the Badgers into the CIS Top Ten this year with a 13-7-1-1 record, five more wins that last year's 8-11-2-1 season. Last weekend Erskine led the Badger to their first ever playoff win and their first appearance at the OUA Women's Hockey Final Four Championship, held this weekend at the University of Toronto.
