LADY VEES SPLASH PAST NORTHERN RIVAL LAKERS IN WOMEN'S SOCCER
Laurentian had a strong start led by an early goal by Watson in the 11th minute. She was able to break away from the Nipissing defensive line and skilfully chipped the ball over Samantha Behm of Winchester, Ont. Fifteen minutes later, Behm redeemed herself with a diving save to her left off of the foot of Alana Brady of Cornwall, Ont. The Lakers seemed to build confidence off this save as they would counter with three shots of their own, but they were turned away by Hoffberg who kept the score 1-0. Near the end of half, Lady Vees substitute Katie Larue of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. sent a fabulous through ball that found Corelli. She buried the ball past Behm in the 42nd minute. The half finished with the Lady Vees up 2-0.
With the second half beginning, it was the Lakers who looked to rebound from their deficit when they put a bouncing ball into the box, which Hoffberg misjudged, accidentally knocking Leesa Church of North Bay, Ont. onto the ground giving the Lakers a penalty. Laidlaw stepped up and took a shot to Hoffberg's right, which glanced off her hand into the net in the 49th minute. The Lakers kept the pressure on the Lady Vees, which led to a corner kick. Off this corner in the 57th minute, Tait was able to find the ball in the middle of the box, she stepped up, and shot the ball into the top left corner, hitting the cross bar in the process. Determined to win the game, the Lady Vees responded right away when Brady found Watson in the box and she put the ball away giving the Lady Vees a 3-2 lead. The Laurentian team pressed for even more goals, but Lakers keeper Behm came up big in net with a couple more incredible diving saves. The game ended with the 3-2 score line in favour of the Lady Vees.
"We changed the way we were playing. We put (Alana) Brady up front with (Lisa) Watson. I thought that was a very good combination," said head coach Rob Gallo. "We have to give Nipissing credit. They came back and made it 2-2. But you have to give our girls credit because they found a way to win that game. This weekend is another must win, you have to win them all at home."
The Lady Vees (2-1-0) will be in action this weekend on Sat., Sept. 12 vs. Trent (0-1-1) at 12 p.m. at the Laurentian Soccer Field. Stay tuned to www.luvoyageurs.com for all your Lady Vees news.
