GRYPHONS TASTE VICTORY FOR FIRST TIME IN 2009 IN WOMEN'S SOCCER
Guelph's record moves to (1-7-3) while Waterloo's is (1-8-2)
The Gryphon's two goals both came from Heather Kendall (Newmarket, Ont.) who consistently attacked the Waterloo net throughout, winning the game for Guelph.
In the opening half of the game Guelph dominated the field. Most of the plays found their way into Waterloo's end, and Guelph had countless shots on net. Laura Baer (Baden, Ont.) had a great opportunity in the 36th minute, but Waterloo goalkeeper Taylor Meyers (Emo, Ont.) rejected it.
As the end of the first half came nearer, the Waterloo offence began to pick up their game and started bringing plays into Guelph's end. Victoria Parker (Toronto), Gryphon goal keep, played with her usual confidence and avoided any last minute goals in the first half.
There was a lot of action by the second half, found mostly in Waterloo's end. The Gryphons continued to dominate the Warriors, and various unsuccessful shots on net were made by Baer, Samantha Bright (Burlington, Ont.), and Kendall. Kendall broke the barrier when she scored the first goal 25 minutes into the second half, by outrunning Warrior defence and shooting past Meyers.
Bright almost scored with a header minutes after the first goal, but couldn't land it. The Warrior's responded by shooting up the field seconds later and Tara Chadwick (Stratford, Ont.) fired at Guelph net but shot wide. With less than two minutes left in the game Kendall scored her second goal with the same technique of leaving defence behind and shooting straight past Waterloo's goal keep. The game ended with a much needed 2-0 win for the Gryphons.
