OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 3 GEE-GEES GET EIGHTH WIN OF SEASON
The Lakers opened the scoring when Amy Laidlaw (Brampton, Ont.) converted a penalty-shot in the final moments of the first-half.
In the second half the Gee-Gees took over, beginning with a 58th minute goal from veteran striker Courtney Luscombe (Ottawa). This was followed by goals from fourth-year players Elise Desjardins (Cumberland, Ont.) and Sara Bullock (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.).
Defender Dominique Falardeau (Ottawa) added a 90th minute goal to round out the scoring.
Both teams play again on Oct. 9. Ottawa hosts Trent and Nipissing hosts Queen's.
LAURIER 3, WINDSOR 0
At Wilfrid Laurier, the day after their first loss of the season, the No. 4 Golden Hawks (6-1-1) regrouped to record a 3-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers (2-2-4).
Heather Malizia (Burlington, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Hawks in the 18th minute, and capitalized again in the 60th minute.
Windsor played the last 15 minutes of the game a man short, as Nicole Dowell (Windsor, Ont.) received two yellow-cards in two minutes, resulting in a match ejection.
Alyssa Coppolino (Kitchener, Ont.) capitalized on the man advantage, scoring Laurier's third goal in the 85th minute.
Windsor visits Western on Oct. 7 and Laurier faces Waterloo on Oct. 8.
YORK 3, BROCK 1
At Brock, in a battle of two OUA West powerhouses, the York Lions (5-2-1) came out on top with a 3-1 win over the No. 7 Brock Badgers (5-2-1).
York's Samantha Gauthier (Laval, Que.) was the offensive star for the Lions, scoring two goals midway through the first half.
Brock's Ali Bettger (Burlington, Ont.) answered for the Badgers, netting a goal in the 43rd minute.
Nicole Markowitz (Toronto) secured York's victory, adding an insurance marker in the 75th minute.
York plays Guelph and Brock faces McMaster on Oct. 7.
TORONTO 1, RMC 0
At RMC, it took an 88th minute goal for the No. 8 Toronto Varsity Blues (7-0-2) to beat the Royal Military College Paladins on Sunday (1-7-1).
The game was scoreless until Toronto substitute Juliana Bergin (Baxter, Ont.) scored late in the game.
Looking ahead, Toronto hosts Ryerson on Oct. 7 and RMC travels to Laurentian on Oct. 9.
CARLETON 2, LAURENTIAN 0
At Carleton, the host Ravens (5-5-1) cruised to victory with a 2-0 win over the visiting Laurentian Lady Vees (3-6-1).
Veteran Natalie Griffin (Ottawa) opened the scoring for the Ravens in the 33rd minute, giving her team the halftime lead.
Alexandra Skupek (Ottawa) followed suit, notching her first goal of the season midway through the second half to secure the victory.
The Ravens look to continue their winning ways against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues while the Vees attempt to pick up a win against the Royal Military College Paladins. Both games will be played on Oct. 9.
QUEEN'S 1, RYERSON 0
At Queen's, the host Gaels (8-1-1) narrowly beat the Ryerson Rams (3-4-4) by a score of 1-0.
After a first-half that featured chances for both teams, the Gaels got on the scoreboard courtesy of a second-half goal from Queen's midfielder Cathleen Brennan (Aurora, Ont.).
Brennan's goal would stand as the game winner.
Gaels Goalkeeper Elena Corry (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded the shutout.
The Rams travel to the University of Toronto for a mid-week match up against the Varsity Blues on Oct. 7, while the Gaels go north for a Oct. 9 game against the Nipissing Lakers.
WATERLOO 1, WESTERN 0
At Waterloo, the day after beating the No. 4-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks, the Western Mustangs (4-4-0) were unable to clinch a victory against the Waterloo Warriors (1-5-2).
Striker Tara Chadwick (Stratford, Ont.) netted the game-winner midway through the second-half to give the Warriors their first win of the season.
Waterloo travels down the road to take on Laurier on Oct. 8 while Western hosts Windsor on Oct. 7.
MCMASTER 3, GUELPH 2
At McMaster, the Marauders (2-4-2) scored three unanswered goals in a come-from-behind victory against the visiting Guelph Gryphons (0-5-3).
Guelph's Natalie Ackerman (Guelph, Ont.) put the Gryphons ahead by two goals, scoring in the 23rd and 29th minutes.
The second-half was all McMaster, as Tara Dawdy (Burlington, Ont.), Hayley Marler (Ancaster, Ont.), and Melanie Van Der Hoop (Oakville, Ont.) each found the back of the net to secure the victory.
Both teams have tough match-ups in store this week. McMaster visits No. 7 Brock and Guelph hosts York.
