BRIGHT PULLS OUT TIE FOR GRYPHONS WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM OVER MARAUDERS
The Gryphons record moves to (0-0-1) as does the Marauders (0-0-1).
Guelph received their one and only well-deserved goal from Bright, a rookie who is proving herself a skilled and determined player, after her header shot the ball right through the Marauder's goalie's hands during the 35th minute of the second half.
In the opening half the Gryphons were challenged by the Marauder's relentless defence, especially a persistent player Carley Luongo (Ancaster, Ont.) who made it difficult for the team to move the plays forward. In the 32nd minute Chantal Malysa (Calgary, Alta.) scored McMaster's only goal after Guelph's defence failed to pursue her.
After the wake-up call of the first goal Guelph's defence picked up their game and began pushing McMaster's offence out of their end, and Melissa Corso (Unionville, Ont.) dominated the field. It left fans hopeful of a stronger second half from the Gryphons, and they didn't fail to impress.
The second half was played with new energy from both teams, with the plays entering in and out of both sides of the field. Bright launched a power driven shot at the net which McMaster's goalie Michelle Spadafora (Dundas, Ont.) dove into the ground and saved.
The Marauder's were given a great opportunity during the 26th minute to score during a free kick, but they failed to break the Gryphon's well-structured 'wall' of players. The next couple of minutes of the game proved to be tense with both teams determined to score. Bright finally got her chance during the 35th minute with a brilliant header straight through the goalies hands, tying up the game.
The Gryphons next play the Brock Badgers on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m at home. The Marauders visit the York Lions also at 1 p.m.
