OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 3 GAELS STRETCH UNBEATEN STREAK TO 13
The win extended the Gaels unbeaten streak to 13 games and their shutout number to nine on the season.
After a back-and-forth affair through the first 15 minutes, the Gaels took control of the game, scoring three times in a span of nine minutes. Off a corner in the 17th minute, Angela Sullivan (Scarborough, Ont.) opened the scoring when she found a loose ball and buried it past the RMC keeper.
From there, MacLellan took over the Gaels attack, scoring twice in a one minute span. First, she found the back of the net off another corner and then, off a misplayed ball by the RMC defence, she scored into an open net.
With the lead comfortably in hand to start the second half, Queen's continued to control the pace of play and were rewarded with two more goals. Jennifer Hutchinson (St. John's, Nfld.) scored in the 53rd minute before rookie Lisa Bache (Burlington, Ont.) rounded out scoring in the 88th minute.
Keeper Chantel Marson (London, Ont.) made one save in the win.
The Gaels will round out their regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Ottawa to battle the Carleton Ravens. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
NIPISSING 1, LAURENTIAN 0
At Nipissing, it was a miserable night weather-wise as cold winds and blowing rain peppered the Education Centre Field, however, the Nipissing Lady Lakers (5-7-3) left the field feeling mighty fine after a hard fought 1-0 victory over their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs (5-8-2).
The victory allowed the Lakers to surpass the Voyageurs in the OUA East standings. The playoff picture seems much brighter for the Lady Lakers as they have climbed two positions in the last week to fifth place.
Second-year midfielder Amy Laidlaw (Brampton, Ont.) wasted little time as she converted a lovely pass from Leesa Church (North Bay, Ont.) in the fourth minute of the game. The Lady Lakers were dominant for most of the first half maintaining most of the possession allowing the Voyageurs very little in terms of quality scoring opportunities. The first half ended with the Lakers up 1-0.
Laurentian seemed to be a different team in the second half as they in turn pressed early for the equalizer putting pressure on the Lakers defence however to no avail. Another surge by Laurentian with 15 minutes left in the game provided some tense moments as keeper Samantha Behm (Winchester, Ont.) was called upon to make some timely saves.
Alexandra Instance (Petawawa, Ont.) had chance to increase the Lakers lead as her low shot beat Laurentian keeper Megan Hoffberg (Brampton, Ont.), however, the shot sailed a few feet past the far post. The score would remain 1-0 and the Lakers walked away with the important victory.
"We were able to score early and play great defence," said Nipissing head coach Vito Castiglione. "This was a great team win which gives us the opportunity to finish in fourth place with a win against Trent combined with Carleton loss."
Behm recorded five saves for the shutout victory while Hoffberg made seven saves in the loss.
The Riley Gallow Cup (named in memory of Laurentian women's coach Rob Gallow's son) was awarded to Laurentian who won by an aggregate score of two.
The Lady Lakers will finish off the regular season schedule Sunday, Oct. 25 as they travel to Peterborough to face the Trent Excalibur.
