OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 3 GEE-GEES ROUT LADY VEES
The Gee-Gees came out aggressively against the Lady Vees (3-5-1) from the start, with second-year defender Nikki Moreau (Almonte, Ont.) scoring the first goal five minutes into the game. Midfielders Catherine Scott (Pointe-Claire, Que.) and Élise Desjardins (Cumberland, Ont.) scored two back-to-back goals 35 minutes in, and third-year defender Gillian Baggot (Ottawa) scored one final goal at 43 minutes, to finish 4-0 at the half.
The team continued to share the scoring, with striker Sara Bullock (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and midfielders Corina Jarrett (Ottawa) and Brittany Harrison (Burlington, Ont.) scoring a goal each to give the Gee-Gees the 7-0 win.
"That is something we strive for," said Harrison, "Having different people score."
Second-year goalkeeper Mélissa Pesant (Gatineau, Que.) and first-year Lisa Anne Sachsalber (Richmond Hill, Ont.) shared the shutout for the Gee-Gees.
"The whole focus was on playing more aggressive and playing more of an attacking style," said head coach Steve Johnson. "I think (the win) has restored confidence in the girls."
The Gee-Gees outshot the Voyageurs 12 to one.
The Gee-Gees, now 7-1-2 in the OUA East, host another game Sunday against Nipissing (2-4-3) at 1 p.m. at Matt Anthony Field. Laurentian visits Carleton at 12 p.m.
WESTERN 3, LAURIER 0
At Wilfrid Laurier, the Western Mustangs (4-3-0) surprise the No. 4 Golden Hawks (5-1-1) with a 3-0 road victory.
Erin Grand (Toronto) netted two second half goals to secure the victory for the Mustangs. Chantal Blais (Toronto) opened the scoring 27 minutes into the game.
Marissa Chin (Stouffville, Ont.) earned the shutout victory in net.
Western visits Waterloo on Sunday, while Laurier hosts Windsor.
BROCK 2, GUELPH 0
At Brock, the No. 7 Badgers (5-1-1) blanked the Guelph Gryphons (0-4-3) by a 2-0 score.
Ali Bettger (Burlington, Ont.) and Lisa D'Aguanno both scored for the Badgers, who are tied with Laurier for the West Division lead.
Rhoden Syreeta earned the shutout in goal for the Badgers, who host York on Sunday. Guelph visits McMaster.
CARLETON 3, NIPISSING 1
At Carleton, the Ravens (4-5-1) defeated the Nipissing Lakers (2-4-3) by a 3-1 count.
Amanda Ngwafusi (Ottawa) opened the scoring for the Ravens in the 14th minute, as Carleton held their 1-0 advantage through halftime.
In the second half, Ngwafusi struck again in the 49th minute. Nipissing finally had a response in the 74th minute of the foot of Leesa Church (North Bay, Ont.).
Ngwafusi completed the hat trick in the 87th minute.
QUEEN'S 4, TRENT 0
At Trent, the Queen's Gaels (7-1-1) downed the Trent Excalibur (1-9-1) by a 4-0 score.
The Gaels got two goals from forward Kelli Chamberlain (North Bay, Ont.) and Chantal McFetridge (Kelowna, B.C.). The fourth goal was an own goal from the Excalibur.
Queen's hosts Ryerson on Sunday. Trent visits Ottawa on Oct. 9.
WINDSOR 4, WATERLOO 4
At Waterloo, the host Warriors (0-5-2) and Windsor Lancers (2-1-4) battled to a 4-4 draw.
Four goals were scored in each half. Waterloo took the early lead courtesy of a Jeenie Caird (Whitby, Ont.) goal in the opening minute. Windsor responded with two goals, as Sara Kox (Denfield, Ont.) and Candace Garrod (Kingsville, Ont.) hit pay dirt.
The Warriors evened the score before halftime as Delta Pilote (Bradford, Ont.) got on the score sheet.
The second half was all Windsor in the beginning as Kox and Garrod both scored again.
But the Warriors battled back in front of their home crowd. Tara Chadwick (Stratford, Ont.) scored in the 72nd minute and Jaclyn Huiskamp (Petersburg, Ont.) got the game-tying goal in the dying moments.
YORK 2, MCMASTER 0
At McMaster, the Marauders (1-4-2) could not tame the York Lions (4-2-1) in a 2-0 outcome.
Samantha Gauthier (Laval, Que.) and Ami Otaki (Kanagawa, Japan) both scored for the Lions. First-year goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.) earned the shutout in net for York.
RMC 2, RYERSON 1
At RMC, the Paladins (1-6-1) got their first win of the season defeating the Ryerson Rams (3-3-4) by a 2-1 score.
Calaigh Copland (Peterborough, Ont.) gave Ryerson an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 16th minute. But Lynlee Armstrong (Bracebridge, Ont.) got the equalizer for RMC in the dying moments of the half, as the score was knotted at 1-1 at the break.
Samantha Beckett (Coquitlam, B.C.) was the heroine for Paladins, scoring the game-winning goal in the 50th minute.
