OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 4 BADGERS TIE NO. 5 GOLDEN HAWKS
Laurier opened the scoring midway through the first half as Ali McKee (Bracebridge, Ont.) beat one Brock defender and buried a shot into the bottom left hand corner past Brock netminder Syreeta Rhoden (Niagara Falls, Ont.).
The Badgers could not get anything to bounce their way until late in the second half when junior forward Cassandre Van Bakel (Aurora, Ont.) buried a shot past Golden Hawks goalkeeper Mal Woeller (Kinburn, Ont.) for her first of the season and school-leading 13th career goal. In just her third season Van Bakel is already the Badgers all-time leading scorer. Teammate Jill Geier ranks second all-time with 12 career goals.
In goal, Rhoden remained undefeated on the season registering eight saves. She is now 2-0-1 in three starts in 2009.
Brock hosts the Waterloo Warriors while Laurier visits the McMaster Marauders in Sunday afternoon action. Both games begin at 1 p.m.
QUEEN'S 3, LAURENTIAN 0
At Queen's, striker Kelli Chamberlain (North Bay, Ont.) scored two goals to lead the Gaels (2-1-1) to a 3-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees (3-2-0).
Fifth-year player Renee MacLellan (Kingston, Ont.) scored the game's first goal in the ninth minute, with Chamberlain adding a pair of second half goals.
Goalkeeper Elena Corry (Hamilton, Ont.) capped her shut out with an outstanding save during a last minute scramble in the 10-yard box.
Queen's host the Nipissing Lakers, while the Lady Vees travel to RMC on Sunday. Both games start at 12 noon.
NIPISSING 3, RMC 1
At RMC, the Nipissing Lakers (2-1-2) rebounded from an early deficit to down the host Paladins 3-1.
Third-year player Samantha Beckett (Coquitlam, B.C.) got the Paladins (0-3-0) on the scoreboard in the third minute, but Nipissing quickly responded on a goal from Alexandra Instance (Petawawa, Ont.).
Kim Tait (Peterborough, Ont.) gave the Lakers their first lead of the game late in the first half. First-year player Ashley Poirier (Thunder Bay, Ont.) added an insurance marker in the 60th minute.
RYERSON 2, TRENT 0
At Ryerson, the host Rams (1-2-3) enjoyed victory for the first time this regular season with a 2-0 victory over the Trent Excalibur (0-4-1).
Third-year midfielder Andrea Raso (Toronto) scored the game's initial goal in the 24th minute. Forward Andrea Demainiw (Etobicoke, Ont.) knocked in the second goal for the Rams.
Rachel McConnell (Toronto) got the shutout win in goal.
Trent hosts the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday at 1 p.m. Ryerson visits Nipissing on Sept. 26 at 12 p.m.
WINDSOR 0, GUELPH 0
At Guelph, goals were hard to come by as the host Gryphons (0-1-2) and Windsor Lancers (1-1-1) battled to a scoreless draw.
First-year Victoria Parker (Toronto) of the Gryphons and Danielle St. Germaine of the Lancers recorded the shutouts in net.
The Lancers visit the York Lions, and the Gryphons host the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon. Both games start at 1 p.m.
YORK 1, WESTERN 0
At York, the host Lions (2-1-0) edged the Western Mustangs (1-2-0) by a 1-0 score in Oakville, Ont.
Ami Otaki (Kanagawa, Japan) scored the lone goal in the contest.
MCMASTER 3, WATERLOO 0
At McMaster, the Marauders (1-1-1) earned their first victory of the 2009 campaign with a 3-0 shutout over the Waterloo Warriors (0-3-0).
Fourth-year player Samantha Batten (Hamilton, Ont.) scored two goals for the Marauders. First-year player Vanessa Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) also netted a goal for McMaster.
First-year Michelle Spadafora (Dundas, Ont.) earned the shutout in net.
