OUA WOMEN'S SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 5 GOLDEN HAWKS DOWN WARRIORS
The Golden Hawks got on the score board first courtesy of a Liora Berger (Richmond Hill, Ont.) goal at the 20 minute mark. The Warriors stormed right after the marker and notched one of their own to tie up the match. Jaine Caird (Whitby, Ont.) was credited with the goal. At the half, the game remained tied 1-1.
The purple and gold continued to pressure the Warriors (1-6-2) in their own zone which led to a turnover. Laurier team captain Sara Hopper (Thornhill, Ont.) capitalized in the 46th minute with a floater that went over Taylor Meyers' (Emo, Ont.) head. The Golden Hawk offence continued to keep Waterloo pinned deep. Midfielder Heather Malizia (Burlington, Ont.) scored her seventh of the season in the 59th minute after splitting two Warrior defenders inside the goalies crease. The Lady Hawks fourth goal came from Alyssa Coppolino (Kitchener, Ont.) in the 70th minute.
Laurier managed 19 shots on net throughout the match, while the Warriors fired three at Hawk netminder Tristin Vogel (Collingwood, Ont.).
The second game of the home and home series will be played on Friday at Waterloo's north campus fields.
YORK 3, GUELPH 0
At Guelph, the Gryphons played a relentless match against the York Lions at the Gryphon Soccer Pitch, which after a strong first half ended with a 3-0 win by the Lions.
The Gryphon's record moves to (0-6-3) while the Lions are at (6-2-1).
The first half of the game was played with equal strife from both teams, but in the late part of the second half the Lions dominated the field with three goals. Ami Otaki (Kanagawa, Japan) scored two and Melanie Sasseville (Terrebonne, Que.) scored the third.
During the first half, it was very clear that both teams were equally matched. The plays moved in and out from each side, with both teams defence playing strong. Guelph had more direct shots on net, but York had more opportunities near the Gryphons net. Phillippa Lyttle (London, Ont.) played a great game for the Gryphons, as she constantly manipulated York players with her unforgiving drive.
Nicole Markowitz (Toronto) had several shots on the Gryphon net and was the core of many of the plays that the Lions ran. Alicia Brown (Brampton, Ont.) was a great competitor to Gryphon offence, and she was constantly pushing them out of the Lion's end. Sasseville saw a lot of action during the first half, and she had a number of near-attempts on Guelph net.
The beginning of the second half seemed to be played confident by both teams. However, as the game went on it became clear that York was beginning to dominate the field. Gryphon goalie Joelle Chartrain (Calgary) made numerous saves, before one shot by Otaki finally got through. Otaki had several more shots on net, and followed through again shortly after with less than 10 minutes left in the game scoring the second goal. The third goal came from Sasseville, who after a confusing scrimmage out front the Gryphon net, fired with less than two minutes left.
