OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: LIONS JOIN GOLDEN HAWKS IN OUA WEST PENTHOUSE
OUA leading scorer Ami Otaki (Kanagawa, Japan) continued her stellar play as she broke the scoreless stalemate in the 69th minute by burying a loose ball after Camille Pereira (Mississauga, Ont.) lugged it past the Golden Hawks defence.
Otaki also flirted with success earlier in the second frame, when she danced effortlessly through three Laurier defenders and banged the soccer ball off the goalpost.
Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.) was fairly busy in goal as she picked up the shutout for York.
It was a 90-minute battle for both teams, as strong defensive coverage and goalkeeping on both sides showed why these two teams are the best in the OUA West. Laurier still holds a tiebreaker advantage in the standings, but with three games remaining the conference title is still up for grabs. It will simply be a matter of who stumbles first.
WINDSOR 1, WESTERN 0
At Windsor, the Western Mustangs lost 1-0 to the Windsor Lancers on a cold, windy night at Alumni Field.
In the 31st minute, Windsor's Meresa Brownlie (Windsor, Ont.) scored the game's only goal, heading in a corner kick from Sara Kox (Denfield, Ont.) into the net behind Western goaltender Nicole Lee (Alisa Craig, Ont.).
Western had a chance to tie the game in extra minutes, but the Windsor's defence pulled together to preserve the win. Despite dominating the play in the game, the Mustangs struggled to score, hitting the Windsor goalkeeper twice on breakaways.
