OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 6 GAELS DEFEATS NO. 3 GEE-GEES FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON
Queen's Angela Sullivan (Scarborough, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 16th minute, beating Ottawa goalkeeper Melissa Peasant (Gatineau, Que.) with a shot from 35-yards.
Fifth-year striker Renee MacLellan (Kingston, Ont.) added to the tally in the 35th minute, beating two Ottawa defenders before notching the game's second goal.
Elena Corry (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded the shutout for the Gaels.
The win puts Queen's in sole possession of first-place in the OUA East.
Both teams have two regular-season games remaining. Queen's travels to RMC and Carleton, while Ottawa visits Ryerson and Toronto.
LAURENTIAN 1, TORONTO 1
The Laurentian Lady-Vees (5-7-2) and the No. 9 Toronto Varsity Blues (10-1-3) played to a 1-1 draw at Varsity Stadium on Friday.
Toronto's goal came in the 38th minute thanks to a free-kick taken by Melanie Seabra (Brampton, Ont.) that was launched just under the cross bar.
Minutes before half-time, Laurentian's Leanne Adams (Mississauga, Ont.) evened the score, curling the ball inside the post.
Despite good second-half goal scoring opportunities for both teams, the game would end in a 1-1 tie.
Laurentian faces northern rival Nipissing in a mid-week match, while Toronto hosts RMC next weekend.
CARLETON 0, QUEEN'S 0
At Richardson Stadium, the Carleton Ravens (6-7-2) and the No. 6 Queen's Gaels (11-1-2) played to a scoreless tie.
The Carleton defensive corps, lead by sweeper Kayla Wood (Bracebridge, Ont.), limited Queens' offensive chances.
Gaels keeper Chantel Marson (London, Ont.) recorded the shutout, her fifth of the season.
A re-match is in store next weekend, as Queen's visits Carleton on Oct. 24. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
NIPISSING 4, RYERSON 1
The Nipissing Lakers (4-7-3) scored early and often in a 4-1 outcome at BMO field against the Ryerson Rams (3-7-4).
The goal-scoring began in the fifth-minute, as Nipissing's Alex Instance (Petawawa, Ont.) headed in a corner kick.
Ryerson countered in the 24th minute when Calaigh Copland (Peterborough, Ont.) converted on a partial breakaway. Copland injured her knee on the play and would not return to the game.
Leesa Church (North Bay, Ont.) gave Nipissing the lead with a rebound goal just prior to half-time.
The Rams pressed early in the second-half, earning a penalty-shot that was turned away by Nipissing keeper Samantha Behm (Winchester, Ont.).
Following Behm's save, it was all Nipissing as Alex Instance and Stephanie Stubbert (North Bay, Ont.) each scored to put the game out of reach.
Nipissing faces Laurentian on Oct. 21 and Ryerson hosts Ottawa on Oct. 24.
RMC 2, CARLETON 1
A penalty-shot goal would be the deciding factor in a 2-1 victory by the Royal Military College Paladins (3-9-1) over the Carleton Ravens (6-7-2).
Laura Gray (Brookside, N.S.) found the back of the net in the 8th minute to put RMC ahead, but Carleton's Aisha Stinson (Ottawa) tied the match in the 60th minute.
In the 65th minute the referee awarded the Paladins a penalty-shot and Samantha Beckett (Coquitlam, B.C.) made no mistake, converting the shot and winning the game.
Next up for both teams is a date with the OUA East leading Queen's Gaels. The Gaels travel to RMC on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and to Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 24.
WINDSOR 1, MCMASTER 0
The visiting Windsor Lancers (4-4-4) narrowly defeated the McMaster Marauders (4-5-3) by a 1-0 score on Saturday.
Windsor's Emilie Glanz (Tecumseh, Ont.) scored her first goal of the season in the 40th minute. It would stand as the game-winner.
Both teams play again on Oct. 24 as the Lancers return home to host the York Lions and the Marauders visit the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
WESTERN 1, BROCK 0
The Western Mustangs (6-6-0) took full points from a match-up with the Brock Badgers (6-4-2) thanks to an unassisted goal from Erin Grand (Toronto, Ont.)
Grand's goal midway through the first half would stand as the game-winner.
Western's Marissa Chinn (Stouffville, Ont.) recorded the shutout.
In the final weekend of regular-season action, the Mustangs host Guelph and York while the Badgers visit Waterloo and Laurier.
TORONTO 2, NIPISSING 1
The No. 9 Toronto Varsity Blues (10-1-3) women's soccer team got back on track after going winless in two games, defeating the Nipissing Lakers (4-7-3) by a score of 2-1 at Varsity Centre on Saturday, October 17.
The Blues opened the scoring in the 20th minute, when Jessica Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) touched the ball past Samantha Behm (Winchester, Ont.) and into the back of net, putting the Blues up 1-0.
The Lakers answered back in the 33rd minute when an open Leesa Church (North Bay, Ont.) curled the ball around the Toronto goalkeeper and inside the right post to even the game at 1-1.
The Blues would immediately regain the lead thanks to a goal off the head of Toronto's Juliana Bergin (Baxter, Ont.).
The Varsity Blues take on the RMC Paladins next Saturday while the Nipissing Lakers face-off with Laurentian on Wednesday.
LAURENTIAN 4, RYERSON 0
The Laurentian Lady Vees (5-7-2) beat the Ryerson Rams (3-7-4) by a score of 4-0 on Saturday.
Leanne Adams (Mississauga, Ont.) scored twice for the Lady Vees. Katie Larue (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Lisa Watson (Newmarket, Ont.) also found the back of the net in the win. Meghan Hoffberg (Brampton, Ont.) picked up the shutout win for the Lady Vees.
The Lady Vees face the Nipissing Lakers on Wednesday and the Rams host the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday.
RMC 2, TRENT 0
The Royal Military College Paladins shutout the visiting Trent Excalibur on Sunday by a score of 2-0.
Sam Beckett (Coquitlam, B.C.) created the opening goal as her free-kick forced the Excalibur's goalkeeper Erin Persi (Sudbury, Ont.) down to her right to palm away the shot. RMC's Britney Brown (Mons, Belgium) was first to react and slotted home the rebound scoring on her starting debut.
In the second-half, RMC substitute Kim Archibald (Kingston, N.S.) extended the Paladins lead making no mistake from 20 yards out.
With a 2-0 lead RMC cruised to a comfortable win, holding off late surges by the visiting Excalibur.
RMC goalkeeper Olivia Clarke (Caledon East, Ont.) recorded her second clean sheet of the season.
Both squads next play at home as the Paladins host the Queen's Gaels and the Excalibur host the Laurentian Lady-Vees.
BROCK 4, WINDSOR 0
The Brock Badgers (6-4-2) shutout the Windsor Lancers (4-4-4) by the score of 4-0 Sunday afternoon at home.
Brock came out flying in this contest as they opened the scoring just three minutes in when rookie Lindsay McDonald (Burlington, Ont.) added her third goal of the season.
Sophomore Laura Tirone (Welland, Ont.) gave the Badgers a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute when she registered her third of the campaign.
In the 27th minute, senior Lisa D'Aguanno (Richmond Hill, Ont.) took a pass from sophomore Cassandre Van Bakel (Aurora, Ont.) and buried it for her third of the year.
Van Bakel would secure the victory in the 59th minute making no mistake on a penalty kick as she drilled a shot into the bottom left hand corner for her team leading fifth goal of the season.
In goal junior Syreeta Rhoden (Niagara Falls, Ont.) recorded three saves for her sixth victory and fifth shutout of the season.
The Badgers end the regular season on the road next weekend when they take on Waterloo and Laurier. The Lancers conclude their regular season with games against York and Guelph.
MCMASTER 3, WESTERN 2
The McMaster Marauders (4-5-3) beat the Western Mustangs (6-6-0) 3-2 at home on Saturday.
In the first half, Tara Dawdy (Burlington, Ont.) notched two and Maria Cusimano (North York, Ont.) scored one to give McMaster a decisive 3-0 lead at the end of the first-half.
The Mustangs refused to be easily beaten and got second-half goals from Erin Grand (Toronto, Ont.) and Sydney Harrison (Richmond, B.C.).
Despite Western's offensive effort late in the game, the Marauders would hold on for the win.
Both teams finish the regular-season next weekend. McMaster visits Laurier and Waterloo while Western hosts Guelph and York.
YORK 3, WATERLOO 0
The York Lions (9-2-1) faced off against the Waterloo Warriors (1-9-2) for the second time this season on Saturday at York Stadium.
The women began their game tightly matched with no goals in the first half. But that changed in the second when the Lions charged ahead. Striker Samantha Gauthier (Laval, Que.) neatly put the first goal on the board, with several more scoring opportunities to ensue. Seven minutes after the first goal, rookie Gina Kripotos (Vancouver, B.C.) was able to score in the 59th minute with assistance from Gauthier.
The final goal of the game came in the 90th minute as York's Navneet Aujla (Brampton, Ont.), set up by Gauthier, drew out goalkeeper Taylor Meyers (Emo, Ont.) and moved the ball past her to bring the final score to 3-0 for York.
The Lions finish their regular-season with matches against Windsor and Western while the Warriors take on Brock and McMaster.
LAURIER 2, GUELPH 0
The No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (9-2-1) defeated the University of Guelph Gryphons (1-8-3) 2-0 at Alumni Stadium in front of 248 fans.
Both teams were battling hard but neither one could capitalize in the first half.
In the 80th minute, Ali McKee (Bracebridge, Ont.) finally got the Golden Hawks on the score board, beating Victoria Parker (Toronto, Ont.) to put the visitors up 1-0. McKee would score again eight minutes later to give the purple and gold at 2-0 advantage.
Laurier will finished the regular season with two home games, one against the McMaster Marauders on Oct. 24 and the second against the Brock Badgers on Oct. 25. Guelph will conclude the regular season with away games at Western and at Windsor.
