THUNDERBIRDS EDGE GAELS FOR CIS BRONZE IN WOMEN'S SOCCER
With the win, Canada West finalist UBC maintained its perfect medal streak at the national tournament. In 11 appearances since they won the inaugural CIS championship in 1987, the Thunderbirds have claimed five gold, two silver and now four bronze medals.
"[The Gaels] were the best possession team that we've played against," commented UBC head coach Dick Mosher. "Definitely a good team and I can see them being a real threat for a few years, they're not going anywhere, but we have a good team, I'm very proud."
The OUA finalist Gaels have played for third place three times in tournament history, winning their lone CIS bronze medal in 2004 when they defeated the Montreal Carabins 1-0 in penalty kicks.
Queen's opened the scoring in the 17th minute as 2009 CIS player of the year Renee MacLellan of Kingston, Ont. sent a nice ball to teammate and Winnipeg native Jacqueline Tessier who made no mistake finding the back of the net.
Treloar of Vancouver, B.C. evened the score eight minutes later when she received a pass from UBC player of the game Frazao of Port Moody, B.C. and sent a nice wide-angled cross over the head of Gaels goalkeeper Elena Corry (Hamilton, Ont.) into the top corner of the net.
Treloar returned the favour in the 42nd minute, sending the ball to Frazao who stepped around a Gaels defender and sent a low shot into the bottom right corner for what would be the eventual game-winner.
"It was great, I feel really good!" said Frazao. "It was a great team effort, it's not really what we wanted but bronze is still good. They were a very good team, they kept possession very well."
UBC held the upper hand throughout the majority of the second half, outshooting the Gaels 6-3.
Third-year UBC midfielder Natalie Hirayama was awarded a penalty kick in the 89th minute, giving an opportunity to seal the deal for her squad, however the Richmond, B.C. native sent her shot off the post. It wouldn't matter in the end as the final whistle blew a minute later.
