OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 3 GEE-GEES FALL TO GAELS
Queen's took an early lead against the Gee-Gees in the first half, with third-year forward Kelli Chamberlain (North Bay, Ont.) scoring for the Gaels. The Gee-Gees held them off for the rest of the half and controlled much of the second, but fell short on attacking the net.
"We controlled a lot of the ball," said head coach Steve Johnson. "We didn't generate enough shooting opportunities."
The Gaels outshot the Gee-Gees this game, recording three shots on goal to the Gee-Gees two.
"We put in a good effort," said fifth-year striker Courtney Luscombe (Ottawa). "We just made little mistakes."
Despite the loss, the Gee-Gees still hold a strong 6-1-2 record in the OUA East division and remain in the No. 1 seat.
The Gee-Gees host two games this weekend, as they take on Laurentian (3-4-1) Sat., Oct. 3, 1 p.m. and Nipissing (2-3-3) on Sun., Oct. 4, 1 p.m. both at the Matt Anthony Field (uOttawa Sports Complex). Queen's visits the Trent Excalibur on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
TORONTO 4, TRENT 0
At Trent, the Trent Excalibur (1-8-1) women's soccer team was overwhelmed by the No. 8 Toronto Varsity Blues 4-0 in home action on Wednesday.
Despite the chilly weather, both teams were in top form at the opening of the game, but U of T soon gained the upper hand, with Erica Basso (Richmond Hill, Ont.) of the Varsity Blues scoring just minutes into the first half. This was swiftly followed up by another point from U of T, this one netted by first-year player Arin King (Pickering, Ont.).
The ball remained in Trent's end for the majority of the half due to U of T's incredible speed and controlled footwork, with the score in U of T's favour 2-0 going into half-time.
The second half was quickly launched with U of T's Jessica Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) driving a beautiful shot into Excalibur's net. Basso added her second goal of the night minutes later.
Although U of T played with a leading edge on Trent, the Excalibur women played a commendable game and really held up their level of play. Excalibur goalkeeper Emma-Lee Parkes (Toronto) played an admirable game in net, with 16 saves against the ongoing pressure from U of T.
Basso is the leading scorer in OUA women's soccer with six goals. The Varsity Blues (6-0-2) visit RMC on Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
