General Write-Up:
McMaster comes into the 2008 season with great optimism. The Marauders will open the season at home, on campus, for the first time since 2003.
McMaster returns 17 starters and 35 dress roster players. McMaster should also benefit from the best recruiting class in the Stefan Ptaszek era.
McMaster returns their entire starting offensive line including fourth year offensive guard, and OUA second-team, all-star, Mike Hoy (Kitchener, ON) and fourth year, offensive tackle and 2008 East West Bowl participant, Justin Glover (Hamilton, ON) and is bolstered by the addition of 6'7", 305lb recruit, Matt Sewell (Milton, ON).
McMaster University will have four players competing for quarterback duties in fourth year incumbent, Ryan Fantham (London, ON), Acadia University transfer, Brian Dowd, sophomore, Kyle Quinlan (Woodslee, ON) and Steven Sparks (Hamilton, ON).
McMaster University returns their top-two pass catchers in fourth year, slotback, Kevin D'Hollander (London, ON), and fourth year, slotback, Matt Peressini (Hannon, ON). D'Hollander (pictured) was an East West Bowl participant in both 2007 and 2008, and was named an OUA second-team all-star last season hauling in 30 receptions for 568 yards and 6 touchdowns. Peressini snared 30 receptions for 399 yards, and 2 touchdowns for the Marauders. The McMaster receiving corps will be bolstered by fifth year, wide receiver, Matt Giordano (Hamilton, ON), Josh Kriedl (Hamilton, ON) and rookie, Mike DiCroce (Hamilton, ON).
The McMaster backfield will return OUA second-team All-Star, Joey Nemet (Burlington, ON). Nemet carried the ball 130 times last season for 759 yards and 5 touchdowns. McMaster will also see the return of Jordan Kozina (Brantford, ON). Kozina was named an OUA second-team all-star as a rookie in 2005 when he rushed for 1191 yards. Kozina last suited up with the Marauders for the 2006 season. He has been centralized with the Rugby Canada team in Victoria, BC since the spring of 2007.
The McMaster defence will return the entire front four, plus all four defensive line reserves. The defensive line will feature, fifth year, OUA second team all-star, defensive end, James Edwards (Hamilton, ON) who was signed by the BC Lions this summer. McMaster will also return, 2008 East West Bowl participant, Mike Wysocki (Mississauga, ON). The McMaster defensive line will add some further depth with the addition of recruits Anthony Bekasiak (Windsor, ON) and Ben D'Aguilar (Hamilton, ON).
The McMaster linebackers graduated OUA second-team all-star and team captain, Simon Binder (Almonte, ON), but returns six dress roster players including 2007 OUA Rookie of the Year, Ryan Chmielewski (St. Catharines, ON) and adds recruit, Dylan Roesch-Crane (Port Colborne, ON).
The secondary will be led by fourth year halfback, Byron Metcalfe (Pickering, ON) and second year corner, Shane Beaton (Brampton, ON). Metcalfe participated in this years East West Bowl.
McMaster will rely heavily on its incoming recruits to contribute right away. This group includes Stephen Dennis (Burlington, ON). Cody Lynch (Hamilton, ON) and Adrian Pecile (Windsor, ON).
The McMaster secondary will return 5 dress roster players, including 2008 East West Bowl participant, and third year, half back, Byron Metcalfe (Pickering, ON). McMaster recruits, Stephen Dennis (Burlington, ON) and Cody Lynch (Hamilton, ON) add some further depth.
Optimism is in the air, for McMaster head coach Stefan Ptaszek's fourth year at McMaster, and the Marauder's second season at Ron Joyce stadium.
