HEAP LEADS NO. 8 GOLDEN HAWKS OVER MARAUDERS IN FOOTBALL
The victory increases the Golden Hawk win streak to nine games over the Marauders, including three post-season appearances over the last six years.
Waterloo native Heap's punt return yardage of 179 yards sets a new Laurier game record, breaking Geoff Keen's 2002 mark of 134 yards. He is currently on pace towards the CIS record of punt return yardage in a season as he now holds 441 this season and the record sits at 777.
"I had a couple of opportunities and made things happen by following my instincts," commented Heap post game on his performance.
Last week the third year business major sat in second place in the nation in all-purpose yards with 616, averaging 205 per game behind Sherbrooke's Pascal Fils. Included in Heap's all-purpose yards are four receptions for 130 yards.
The game marked the first start for quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.). The third-year quarterback completed 12-of-17 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns including an 88-yard pass and run to Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.). He also claimed one for himself on a one-yard run.
"Pawliuk and Heap both had tremendous performances today and I couldn't be more proud of the efforts of everyone today," commented an elated Laurier head coach Gary Jeffries post-game. "A wounded Hawk is a dangerous Hawk and despite the fact that we have good athletes on the sidelines, there are some good ones on the field."
A roughing the kicker call at around the four-minute mark of the third quarter was the initial move in momentum for the Hawks. Earlier in the game the team was having trouble moving the ball and as a result saw the defence on the field more than they had to be. Possession time by the midway mark of the contest was 18:06 for McMaster and 11:54 for Laurier while the score was 7-7.
The touchdown pass to Chambers came after the unsportsmanlike penalty call and by the end of the quarter Laurier was up 23-7.
Rookie Alex Anthony (Victoria, B.C.) contributed a pair of majors in the contest including one where he fell on a Mike Montoya (Burlington, Ont.) fumble in the McMaster end zone. Montoya carried for 102 yards, which was his third game with over 100 yards.
Laurier however did not improve on one area that has been of focus – penalties. The team saw 13 calls for 160 yards while the Marauders were penalized nine times for 83 yards.
"Penalties and not turning the ball over are two things that we need to work on," said Jeffries when asked about next week against the Ottawa Gee-Gee's. "This is a good football team and we will only get better."
The Golden Hawk defence had another impressive performance as they held the Marauders to only 250 yards while Laurier netted 424. Linebacker Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) led the team with 5.5 tackles (five solo) and just behind him was the trio of rookie Nick Sapone (Richmond Hill, Ont.), Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and Stephen Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.) all had five.
McMaster's touchdown points came from a 27-yard interception return by Cody Lynch as well as a 75-yard punt return by Michael Dicroce.
"I rushed the outside and they were a little tired and beaten and I was able to get there," said Cormack when asked about his game-high two sacks. "It was a good team effort overall as our defensive coverages are so sound that it gives me time to get to the quarterback."
Kicker Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) had a 39.7 punt average throughout the game on nine kicks while also adding three converts, putting him just one short of the Golden Hawk career record of 103 held by Brian Devlin from 2003 to 2005.
"I have to give credit to all the offences over the last five years," said Mamo when asked about approaching the monumental mark. "Any record with a team of this calibre is an honour."
The Golden Hawks (3-1) next host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-2) at University Stadium in week five of OUA action. The game on Oct. 3, marks the annual homecoming celebration for the Golden Hawks and the game will kick off at 1 p.m. live on the Score Television network.
