GOLDEN HAWKS EARN BYE IN OUA FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
While the No. 2 nationally-ranked Queen’s Gaels (7-1) had already locked up first place and home field advantage throughout the Yates Cup prior to Saturday’s action, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (6-2) were able to secure a berth directly into the OUA semifinals by virtue of their 25-13 win over Queen’s. Finishing in a four-way deadlock for second place with the No. 6 Western Mustangs, No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees and No. 10 McMaster Marauders, the Golden Hawks have a perfect record among these teams against common opponents, giving them the all important tiebreaker. Both Queen’s and Laurier will enjoy a bye next week before hosting semifinal games on Sat., Nov. 7. Both semifinals will be seen on The Score Television Network.
The second-place tiebreaker gives defending Yates Cup champion Western the No. 3 seed and 2008 finalist Ottawa fourth place in the OUA final standings. Both will host quarter-final games on Sat., Oct. 31 beginning at 1 p.m. Western defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 47-0 on Saturday, while the Ottawa Gee-Gees officially eliminated the Windsor Lancers (2-6) from the post-season with a 24-9 victory.
While they won on Saturday, the Marauders did not have out-of-town results fall in their favour, earning the fifth seed. McMaster defeated the Guelph Gryphons 32-29, as the Gryphons will back into the post-season as the final playoff seed with a record of 3-5.
The Marauders will travel to Ottawa next Saturday to face the Gee-Gees. It marks the second straight season the Gee-Gees will open the season against a team they did not meet in the regular season.
The other quarter-final which will be aired by The Score Television Network pits the Gryphons against the Mustangs in a rematch of one of the more exciting games of the regular season. The Mustangs pulled out a 41-39 win at Guelph on a last-second field goal by Darryl Wheeler (Hamilton, Ont.) on Sept. 26.
The 102nd Yates Cup, presented by Pioneer Petroleums, will take place on Sat., Nov. 14 at the home of the highest-remaining seed.
